It's been a busy year for Watershed - the home of new work and artistic development at STC. We supported 4 new works to the stage, continued to develop a number of new Australian works, and had the pleasure of continuing the proud tradition of awarding the Patrick White Playwrights Award and Fellowship. The inaugural Watershed Writers group has been going strong with regular masterclasses, industry workshops, and our first ever Watershed Development week. And we hosted Watershed Moments including Suzie Miller's The Election Monologues and Playwrights Lab with Contemporary Asian Australian Performance. We're looking forward to another year in 2025 of watershed moments for new Australian theatre. Announcing our new Artistic Director, Mitchell Butel We’re thrilled to announce that Sydney Theatre Company has appointed award-winning actor, director, writer and producer, Mitchell Butel, as Artistic Director and co-CEO, taking over from Kip Williams who is stepping down at the end of the year. STC audiences will be very familiar with Mitchell’s work – in his three-decade long history with the Company, he has worked with every single artistic director across 18 productions. Mitchell joins us from State Theatre Company of South Australia, where he has been Artistic Director since 2019. One of Australia’s most versatile artists, Mitchell has performed in or directed over 150 stage productions, worked with every Australian state theatre company and won multiple Helpmann, Sydney Theatre and Green Room Awards. Mitchell has said he is “simultaneously humbled and thrilled’’ to be appointed to the role: “With such rich history and continuing impact, STC’s work has helped both mirror and define Sydney and the nation.
