Today is #NationalThreatenedSpeciesDay, and the anniversary of Tassie’s thylacine passing into extinction. Thanks to support from the Australian Research Council and NESP Resilient Landscapes Hub we're partnering with the University of Tasmania, WWF-Australia and the Tasmanian Quoll Conservation Program to protect the charismatic eastern quoll from a similar fate. The project is focusing on the release of captive-bred quolls across sites in the Midlands and the East Coast, selected specifically for their dwindling numbers of quolls. Intensive monitoring conducted at these sites beforehand, in addition to further monitoring of released quolls, will provide valuable information about the threats and resources that are key to their successful recovery. With Tassie supporting Australia’s only remaining wild population of eastern quolls, this project is critical for understanding what measures we can put in place to reverse their decline. Stay tuned for some more #quollity content. #nature #keeptassiewild #wildlifeconservation #tasmania #natureconservation #positivenature #naturelovers #naturepositive #naturalecosystems #ecosystems #ecosystemrestoration #fieldwork #environment #science #ecologicalrestoration #collaboration #protection #community #biodiversity #conservation #team #naturepositivevibes #research #stem #quoll

A huge thanks to everyone who attended TLC’s Science Symposium last week. It was inspiring to see scientists and practitioners ranging from PhD students to Professors come together and discuss the findings from the important work they’re conducting across Tasmania. Thanks also goes to our excellent speakers, from our partners Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas), University of Tasmania, Nature Glenelg Trust, Analytical Edge, NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and, of course, TLCs own scientists. A wide variety of topics were covered, from saltmarsh restoration to quoll declines to gardening for wildlife, all of which generated lively discussion. If you missed the event or were unable to attend, you can see the recordings from the sessions will be available on our Youtube account in the next few weeks. #science #conservation #natureconservation #biodiversity #womeninscienceaustralia #stem #research #womeninstemau #learning #team #climate #alpine #wildlifeconservation #ecologicalrestoration #ecosystemrestoration #naturalecosystems #study #studentlife #ecosystemservices #Revegetation Photos by Loic Le Gully.

It's Include a Charity Week, a time when we ask our community to consider leaving a gift in your Will that will protect Tassie’s precious landscapes and leave a meaningful and enduring legacy. This year’s theme, ‘Be the Spark,’ speaks to the powerful impact a bequest can have on our conservation efforts and how your legacy can make a difference. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. If you are interested in leaving TLC a gift, or would just like more information, please reach out to Annabelle Sweetman or head to our website for more information, tasland.org.au/giw or 0409 429 660 Together, we can create a lasting impact and safeguard our environment for future generations. #includeacharityweek #includeacharity #includeacharityweek2024 #notforprofit

This tranquil forested property adjoining the Ben Lomond National Park is for sale as part of TLC's Revolving Fund. Roses Tier in Upper Blessington protects a mix of eucalypt forest, rainforest, highland grassy sedgeland and rare mound springs. It offers habitat for several of Tasmania’s special threatened fauna species, including wedge-tailed eagles, spotted-tail quolls and Tasmanian devils. It offers stunning views of Ben Lomond and other mountains in the northeast highlands. In the 2023 financial year, our community contributed more than 570 days of volunteered time. This enables us to achieve wonderful outcomes for nature that we simply couldn't do alone. We would also like to take this opportunity to invite people not currently volunteering with us to give it a go! Planned burning is important for Land for Wildlife landholders, for ecological management as well as for fuel reduction and safety, so we were very fortunate to learn from Red Hot Tips in July. Landholders came from around the state for an opportunity to work on burn plans for their own properties. Sam Tacey and Andrew Crowden (Red Hot Tips) shared lots of their awesome expertise about factors affecting fire intensity, measuring fuel loads and fuel moisture, lighting patterns, equipment, weather conditions and more. Thanks also to St Helens Fire Brigade, Greg Medcraft (PWS Aboriginal Fire Officer) and Lauren Bird (Private Land Conservation Program). #climate #keeptassiewild #collaboration #natureconservation #fieldwork #greatoutdoors #nature #protection #landforwildlife #biodiversity #conservation #community #gardenlife #gardening #environment #tasmania Photos by Anna Povey

TLC staff assisted University of Tasmania ecologists set-up a Flux tower at our Silver Plains Reserve. This instrument measures the exchange of CO2 between the land and the air, helping us understand if this environment, subalpine peaty grasslands, is absorbing or adding CO2 to the atmosphere. It is just one of multiple experiments established by Mark Hovenden and his lab as a part of the Australian Mountain Research Facility, a network of long-term research sites across southeast Australia that are investigating the impact of global warming on highland ecosystems. Initial results from the first tower established in 2019 are fascinating, showing that these marshes can act as both sinks or sources, depending on the hydrology of the wetlands. Longer term results from the UTAS team will help us understand the benefits of restoring wetlands and retaining water in the landscape for positive conservation outcomes. #nature #greatoutdoors #discovertasmania #natureconservation #collaboration #keeptassiewild #wild #fieldwork #team #science #centralhighlands #centralhighlandstas #centralplateau #climate #announcement #womeninscienceaustralia #womeninstemau #research #stem #alpine #climatechange #ClimateAction Photos by Aimee Bliss

Ever wondered how to create a garden that is also a habitat for birds? When creating a garden or landscape to attract birds, it's crucial to include a variety of vegetation layers and species. To achieve this we suggest a strategy that includes considerations for seven key areas: variety, large trees, balanced planting, native plants, dead branches, fruit and seeds and fire safety considerations. Different birds have distinct needs: scrubwrens forage on the ground, brown thornbills inhabit mid-level shrubs, and parrots prefer trees. Dense vegetation is essential for many species, providing food, water, shelter, and breeding sites. Read our key planting strategy in the Land for Wildlife Winter newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/gqSKYnvZ #wildlifeconservation #tasmania #WildTracker #landforwildlife #community #greatoutdoors #gardening #birdwatching #twitcher #birdlife #birds #birding #garden #gardenlife Photos by James Hattam
