Starting January 1, mandatory climate change reporting begins, and data on product durability, reuse, and circular business models like The Volte and eBay Australia can provide significant value for retail companies. Key benefits include reducing Scope 3 emissions by extending product lifecycles through resale or rental, supporting circular economy efforts, and identifying business opportunities in a low-carbon economy. Additionally, this data aids in managing climate-related risks, enhancing sustainability metrics, and informing strategy disclosures. Tackling climate change will require collaboration across multiple industries to drive meaningful progress. https://lnkd.in/gp76v6bn

Our Chief Brands & Strategy Officer, Kellie Hush, recently joined Mark Bouris AM on The Mentor podcast Apple to discuss the evolving fashion industry and Kellie's journey from the media to meeting The Volte CEO Bernadette Olivier and making the jump to a fast growing tech startup. They addressed key challenges, such as the rise of ultra-fast fashion and the urgent need for innovation. With sustainability regulations on the horizon, the industry has an opportunity to diversify through circular business models like rental, which platforms like The Volte are already leading.

The Volte Chief Brands and Strategy officer Kellie Hush caught up with Mark Bouris AM for The Mentor podcast. They first met two decades ago when Kellie was editor of Grazia and a guest judge on Celebrity Apprentice. This time, we dive into the future of fashion and the rising threat of fast, disposable fashion and product returns. Hear why Kellie made the bold move from media to be a leader at The Volte, a company focused on sustainability and the circular economy. The fashion industry stands at a crossroads. It's not the first time fashion has faced disruption—think Meta and TikTok—but many brands remain stuck in "business as usual." Consumers are changing faster than ever, and the future of fashion demands sustainability, circular models, and an end to the "take, make, waste" economy. The shift is already happening. The future is now... Listen Now on Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/eCtVDAZN Listen Now on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eqfpS5m3

Great catching up with Mark Bouris AM The Mentor podcast (We first met almost two decades ago when I was a guest judge on Celebrity Apprectice - I was editor of Grazia) This time we were focused on the business of fashion and where it is headed. The dangerous trend of fast fashion and returns and why I have transitioned out of media to work with a future-focused business at The Volte The industry is at a crossroad, and it’s not the first time fashion has been disrupted — e-commerce, fast fashion, Meta, TikTok — yet a large proportion of the industry is still focused on how they have always done business, not on what the future of fashion will be and how the consumer is shifting faster than they are. Sustainability, circular business models and not a take, make, waste economy. It’s happening now … eBay Bernadette Olivier Listen Now on Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/eCtVDAZN Listen Now on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eqfpS5m3

Regulation promoting sustainability may be the final catalyst for the fashion industry to innovate and diversify its revenue streams. This is despite rising supply chain and marketing costs, coupled with the rise of unregulated ultra-fast fashion giants like Shein and Temu, which have pushed the industry to the brink of collapse. In 2000, the music industry relied on CD sales for 95% of its revenue but quickly declined with the shift to digital. Like music, fashion can recover by embracing resale and rental, as consumers have already done on platforms like The Volte, eBay, Poshmark and Depop. This shift will create new revenue streams for retailers and unlike CDs, positions fashion as an income-generating asset, proven by items such as sneakers on StockX, eBay and GOAT Group. Consumers will be incentivized to invest in high-quality fashion that holds value in the circular economy, while digital authentication will help combat counterfeits—setting this model apart from the disposable nature of ultra-fast fashion. Circularity is crucial for sustainability but equally crucial for the industry's survival. eBay Australia Kellie Hush James Linney Ainsley Simpson Seamless Rebecca Newton Anne-Marie Cheney Kirsty Keoghan eBay Ventures Chris Kaufman Henri Jaanimägi João Duarte Rosie Hartman Jonelle Thomas Adi Thacker Beatriz Reyero James Edwards Tracie Clark Australian Fashion Council (AFC) Melissa Singer Debra Langley Lisa Lake Timo Rissanen University of Technology Sydney
