Our new video has arrived from Carbon Commons, showcasing the award-winning Michael Kirby Building. This project is a testament to how sustainable timber solutions can breathe new life into existing structures. Through the integration of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam, a 1980s concrete building has been transformed into a modern, warm, and collaborative learning space. The video highlights key features such as the striking central atrium, scenic lift, and cantilevered CLT meeting rooms—each demonstrating the seamless blend of sustainability and innovation. Designed as a Law School Hub, the building fosters connections between academia and industry with state-of-the-art meeting spaces, collaboration areas, and event venues. With a 5-Star Green Star certification, the project ensures long-term environmental benefits and adaptability for workplace, research, and teaching environments. We’re proud to have worked alongside Rubner and KLH Massivholz to supply and install the glulam and CLT, ensuring a seamless process and a high-end architectural finish. Watch the video to experience this remarkable space. Client: FDC Construction & Fitout Architect: Hassell Services: Detailed design, Fabrication, Delivery to site Completion: 2024

More Stunning Photos from Sages Road Depot! Theca Timber is thrilled to share more breathtaking images of our work on the Sages Road Depot—an architecturally striking operations hub for The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust in Glenroy, Melbourne. Designed by Searle x Waldron Architecture, this state-of-the-art facility seamlessly integrates offices, meeting rooms, a workshop, an auditorium, and parking, creating a highly functional and cohesive workspace for employees. Our role in the project involved timber engineering consultation and optimising the structural glulam trusses for efficient production and assembly. Collaborating with multiple suppliers, we developed a detailed LOD400 model, ensuring precision in CNC manufacturing while preserving the architectural vision. Once again, timber proves its strength—not just in structure but in sustainability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal. This project is a testament to how engineered timber enhances both design and environmental outcomes. We have many more incredible photos to share in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out as we continue showcasing the beauty of Sages Road! Cumberland City Council has shared an incredible timelapse capturing the transformation of Eric Tweedale Stadium, and we’re thrilled to revisit this landmark project. Nested in a green park in the Cumberland City Council, West Sydney, the Eric Tweedale Stadium, named after a “living legend” of the Australian Rugby, is a new construction of a Grandstand for 750 spectators with change rooms, multipurpose room, office, amenities, community function room, canteen, kitchen and a covered viewing deck. As Western Sydney’s first mass timber stadium, this redevelopment showcases the strength, sustainability, and beauty of engineered timber. Our team at Theca Timber worked closely with the project partners to deliver a cutting-edge glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure that not only enhances the stadium’s performance but also significantly reduces its carbon footprint. This project is a testament to the growing role of timber in large-scale infrastructure, proving that sustainable materials can deliver both durability and architectural excellence. Watch the timelapse to see the entire journey—from concept to completion—and witness how mass timber is shaping the future of Australian sports infrastructure. Client: Belmadar Completion: 2021

At Theca Timber, we believe the Northcote Aquatic & Recreation Centre deserves another spotlight, especially for our many new followers who may have missed this incredible project. The Northcote Aquatic & Recreation Centre is a landmark achievement in sustainable architecture, and Theca Timber is proud to have played a role in this groundbreaking project. Designed by Warren & Mahoney and constructed by Kane Constructions, this facility sets a new benchmark as Victoria’s first all-electric aquatic centre. More than just a state-of-the-art recreational space, it embodies cutting-edge sustainable design, proving that environmental responsibility and functionality can go hand in hand. A key element of the centre’s sustainability is its extensive use of engineered timber, which significantly reduces embodied carbon while enhancing structural efficiency. Glulam beams and cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels were used to create expansive, open spaces while maintaining strength and durability in an aquatic environment. The natural aesthetic of timber also contributes to a biophilic design, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere for visitors. Prefabricated off-site, the timber elements allowed for precision construction, reduced waste, and streamlined installation, reinforcing timber’s role as a smart, sustainable building solution. Now fully operational, the facility offers cutting-edge swimming and fitness amenities while standing as a testament to the power of sustainable design.
