⚕ Medical Careers Expo 2025 ⚕ “Where will your career path take you?” was the theme at the 2025 Australian Medical Association Queensland Medical Students Career Expo, held in Brisbane last week. The Medical Careers Expo was attended by more than 560 delegates and hosted 49 exhibitor booths. In attendance were nine specialist colleges including Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. This year Dr Krystyna de Lange Thursday Island Senior Medical Officer, joined Medical Workforce Coordinator Mauragh Harbert in running the TCHHS booth. The booth attracted a lot of interest from medical students in their early years of study as well as junior doctors in their first few years of rotations. “Attending the AMA Career Expo on behalf of Torres and Cape Hospital Service was a rewarding experience, said Dr Krystyna. "As a rural GP, I had the opportunity to engage with medical students and fellow doctors, sharing insights into my life and work in the Torres Strait." "It was fulfilling to discuss the unique challenges and rewards of practicing in such a remote area, as well as the rich cultural and community connections that come with it. I enjoyed helping others understand the significant impact that working in rural and remote areas can have on both personal and professional growth." The expo was a wonderful opportunity to ‘plant the seed’ and to showcase what an incredible place TCHHS is to live and work along the way. "It was inspiring to connect with future healthcare professionals who are interested in making a difference in rural and remote Australia," said Dr Krystyna.

👏 Northern crew lose locks to kick lymphoma 👏 The Thursday Island Hospital breezeway just got a little breezier for a band of hirsute health professionals. Six TCHHS staff on Thursday Island participated in the World’s Greatest Shave to support Midwifery Educator Rachel Bakker’s fight against blood cancer this week. Director of Nursing Jane Davies lost her locks to support Rachel’s battle. “It was odd not feeling the wind in my hair,” Ms Davies said. “It was a little cold back in the air conditioning.” The Thursday Island DON was a newcomer to the World’s Greatest Shave. And while it may be some time for her crowning glory to regrow, she didn’t regret a moment of the breezeway barbering. “It is a really good cause, and your hair will grow back,” Ms Davies said. “This is temporary, a short-term thing, everyone was so supportive.” So supportive in fact, that team Thursday Island have so far raised nearly $4,600, almost enough to fund three months of lab costs for a research project into blood cancer treatments. “We might be the most northern group in Australia to do this,” Ms Davies said. The team is currently ranked number 13 in the Queensland workplace category for money raised. “You don’t have to shave it all off. You can cut, colour, shave or donate,” Ms Davies said. “One of the staff had really long hair that she cut to her shoulders.” More than 135,000 Australians are living with blood cancer or a related blood disorder and more than 19, 400 people will be newly diagnosed with blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma nationally each year. One person is diagnosed with the disease every 27 minutes. Each day, 16 people will lose their life to the disease. “It’s not too late to donate,” Ms Davies said. “Let’s make our team number 1.” ℹ For more information or to donate to Team Thursday Island, visit https://lnkd.in/gFnvs2Ku

🤩 A visit from the Captains! 🤩 Consultant Paediatrician for Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service, Dr Alison Harris provides outreach and Telehealth services to Aurukun, Pormuraaw and Kowanyama. Last month, the Paediatric Outreach team visited these communities to conduct a clinic with the support of the Starlight Foundation team! Captain Crumple and Captain Yeehaw, pictured, ran activities with infants prior to their paediatric consults. “The captains were so good to have on the trip; they improved the willingness of families to wait and eased the mood when seen, but also really value-added to observations about communication and social skills and play,” stated Dr Alison. The Starlight Captains support 8 paediatric and paediatric cardiology clinics in the Torres and Cape each year! ⭐

🤩 'What a RIPPAH!' - success on Thursday Island for placement program 🤩 Guillermo Stemann is a fourth-year Queensland University of Technology radiography student who is currently completing a 10-week clinical placement at Thursday Island Hospital under the Rural Immersion Placement Program - Allied Health (RIPPAH). Guillermo, or “G” as he is affectionately called, has become a valued member of the Medical Imaging Team at Thursday Island Hospital immersing himself into the clinical setting and developing his skills in CT and general, mobile and emergency X-Ray. For student radiographers, a clinical placement in a remote setting offers a unique and invaluable learning experience. It fosters independence, technical skill development, and a deep understanding of patient centred care. Working as part of a small team has allowed Guillermo the time and dedicated support to refine his skills. During his time on TI, Guillermo has also embraced the experience of living in the Torres Strait, immersing himself in activities within the community. Guillermo is a passionate fisherman and gastronomist (big 'foodie') with local crayfish being a favourite. The Thursday Island Imaging Team are full of praise for his adaptability and passion, noting that he has quickly become a valued member of the team. We wish Guillermo all the very best for the remainder of his studies and hope to see him working back in the TCHHS in the near future. The collaborative Rural Immersion Placement Program is a clinical education initiative for domestic students studying an allied health university program in Queensland. ℹ More information on RIPPAH can be found online: https://lnkd.in/g3Atf694
