I’m CLSS proudly presents the 2023 issue of our flagship quasi-academic law journal the Gavel! The Gavel was founded in 2013, originally as a newsletter covering legal summaries and commentary. Since 2016, it has evolved into a quasi-academic law journal with the aim of exploring and engaging in contemporary legal discussions. It encourages students from diverse backgrounds to explore and research pressing issues that influence the legal landscape of countries in the Asia-Pacific region today. In this edition, we have published several articles, case analyses, and news summaries, covering a range of legal topics such as artificial intelligence, intellectual property, economic trade regulation, and environmental, social, and corporate governance. In this year's The Gavel, we present a diverse range of article submissions that delve deep into contemporary legal and commercial issues of our day. In particular, Peter Wang examines the role of Al-informed administrative decision making during COVID-19, with a key focus on how government power and human rights are affected by the implementation of Al-technology. Wang's contributions also include two case notes. Zheyuan Chen conducts a critical analysis of the development of copyright law in China and its ability to deal with the copyright issues arising from the explosion of technology and social media in the modern age. In the 2023 Commercial Awareness Newsletters, we featured five news summaries authored by Shysie Wang and Xinyi (Selena) L. including the Mercer Super "greenwashing" incident, China-Australia cross-border business cooperation in 2023, the European Union's latest AI legislation, the Biden administration's restrictions on high-tech investments in China, and the proper procedures for employers requesting employees to work on public holidays under Australia's Fair Work Act. We hope these articles encourage students to stay informed about business developments and current events while providing valuable insights. After an anonymous peer review by our team, the winner of this year's The Gavel Contribution Award is Zheyuan Chen. A prize of $300 will be awarded shortly. CLSS would like to extend our gratitude to the editorial team. The team was led by Will Zheng and consisted of Kerry Fu, Krista Li and Shihao Zhao. The publication could not have been made without their dedication. Further, we would like to thank Yixue Mei and Ruocheng (Bright) Shi for acting as our editorial advisor. Lastly, a huge thank you to Maria Wei, our Publications Director, for her effort in compiling the submissions into a pleasantly readable form. The Gavel 2024 is now accepting submissions for publication. For more information about the Gavel, please visit our website. Hope you enjoy the read and wish to see your submission next time!
