In March 2024, close to 1900 lawyers completed a confidential survey about their experiences of wellbeing, workplace culture and ethics for a new study by researchers from The Australian National University and the University of Melbourne. Today, we’re pleased to share the initial findings. Read more on our website and stay tuned for the full report in the coming months. We thank the lawyers who shared their valuable insights for inclusion in this project. About us
The Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (VLSB+C) is the regulator of the legal profession in Victoria. We are responsible for regulating lawyers through the granting of licences as well as investigating and acting on enquiries and complaints from the public. As a modern regulator, we are committed to educating lawyers about current and emerging issues to drive innovation, compliance and harm reduction, and improving the public’s understanding of the legal sector to ensure all Victorians have access to effective and high-quality justice. Our people are passionate about maintaining and protecting the rule of law by safeguarding the integrity of the legal profession. The VLSB+C’s purpose is to regulate legal practices in Victoria and promote trust and confidence in the legal profession. We are a growing organisation made up of outstanding teams on a mission to help consumers and lawyers. Over time, we have improved our great organisational culture. Our People Matter Survey results show our staff are proud to work for our organisation, with our results being 9% higher than the wider Victorian Public Sector. The Torch's Future Dreaming exhibition opens today! VLSB+C is a proud supporter of The Torch’s vital work in access to justice and improving outcomes for First Nations Victorians. The exhibition is on display at The Torch Gallery, 146 Elgin St Carlton, Wurundjeri Country until Saturday 23 November.
'Future Dreaming' is an exhibition of 250 artworks created by First Nations artists incarcerated in Victorian prisons in 2024. Each artist has created an artwork that explores their concept of “Future Dreaming.” Re-entering society after incarceration is a challenging transition, with 50.2 per cent of incarcerated #Aboriginal and #TorresStraitIslanders returning to prison within two years of their release. The Torch works with artists to strengthen the cultural, economic, and social connections that help break the cycle of reoffending. Using brushes, paint and canvas, artists participating in 'Future Dreaming' explore dreamt and potential pathways ahead of their release. The resulting artworks express their visions and aspirations. We were delighted to host guests from Australia and the world this week for a special event, Lawyer wellbeing: research into practice, compered by our own Lawyer Wellbeing Manager, Lucy Fraser. Industry-leading researcher Lucinda Soon shared insights on the last 50 years of research into #lawyerwellbeing and where it’s heading. Professor Vivien Holmes from the The Australian National University (ANU) shared initial findings from research into workplace culture, ethics and lawyer wellbeing – which is being supported by VLSB+C, Legal Practice Board of Western Australia and The Law Society of NSW. Matt Healey spoke about the VLSB+C’s Theory of Change project, which will see the legal system co-design a shared model for system-wide change in lawyer wellbeing. To end the session, Lucinda Soon sat down with Carly Schrever PhD and Law Institute of Victoria’s Wellbeing Manager, Emily Knowles, for a conversation to share research, information and ideas about lawyer wellbeing. Thank you to all our special guests for this productive and inspiring session. Step by step, this important work is creating a system that fosters better lawyer wellbeing.
