🌏 It takes an international collaboration to tackle a global health challenge. Anaemia is one of the most common yet preventable causes of illness and mortality in low- and middle-income countries, particularly affecting pregnant women and young children. Our anaemia research team, led by Professor Sant-Rayn Pasricha, is dedicated to changing this reality. Through a series of large randomised controlled trials in rural Bangladesh and Malawi, we’re working to uncover new solutions for anaemia control to improve maternal and child health outcomes. Last week our collaborators from Australia, Malawi and Bangladesh gathered in Melbourne to discuss progress and plan the future of these essential trials. Our collaborative network comprises anaemia researchers, clinical staff, researchers concerned with placental function, neurodevelopment, bone development, immunity, implementation science and health economics, as well as biostatisticians, data managers and others. Together, we’re working to develop much-needed new treatment and delivery options for anaemic and iron-deficient women and improve health outcomes in resource-poor communities. WEHI researchers are honoured to be recognised for their innovation and impact, with two groundbreaking projects nominated for the prestigious Research Australia Awards. The TDSA, a collaboration leveraging #datascience to drive medical advances, has been nominated for the Digital and Data Health Innovation Award. Dr Ng and his pioneering work in #lungcancer research have earned a nomination for the Discovery Award. The Research Australia 2024 Health and Medical Research Awards will be presented at a gala event on 14 November, celebrating the achievements of individuals and teams across the nation who drive life-enhancing innovation and advancements.

It was a pleasure hosting delegates from AusBiotech at WEHI! Our visitors enjoyed a tour of WEHI’s cutting-edge National Drug Discovery Centre, led by Associate Professor Kym Lowes and Dr Kate Jarman before moving onto formal presentations facilitated by WEHI lab head Professor Guillaume Lessene, with Dr David Segal and Dr Victoria Jameson of WEHI’s Business Development team. The event was also a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent and innovation in the Parkville biomedical precinct with insightful presentations from Professor Chris Porter from Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Professor Brad Turner from The Florey. 🔬👏 IP Group Australia is proud to have led a seed funding round into exteRNA, an Australian company looking to develop first in class small molecule therapeutics targeting unique aspects of RNA processing, for a range of diseases. RNA processing is a critical biological process that impacts gene expression, that is altered in various conditions, including several cancers of high unmet need, and neurodegenerative disorders. By targeting a unique pathway for RNA modulation with small molecules, exteRNA aims to target critical disease drivers, to provide new therapeutic options that can significantly alter disease trajectories. A landmark study led by WEHI and La Trobe University has found a potential new diagnostic marker that could be used to better detect the level of tissue damage in our bodies. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small ‘delivery trucks’ released by our #cells that deliver important materials to other cells to aid cellular communication. This study revealed, for the first time, a link between levels of EVs in the blood and #tissuedamage caused by diseases such as #leukaemia. Researchers hope to leverage the critical new insight to develop a blood test to monitor #cancer patients with tissue damage, which could, in future, enhance treatment strategies for blood cancers and other #diseases.
