We were thrilled to present Wilderlands in the Innovators Hub on the first day of the Global Nature Positive Summit 2024. Bringing together leaders from government, corporate sectors, Indigenous Peoples, and research and environmental organisations from around the world, it was a chance to explore how we can accelerate collective action to drive investment in nature and strengthen activities to protect and repair our environment. Held at the International Convention Centre and co-hosted by the Australian federal and New South Wales state governments, we were encouraged to hear Tanya Plibersek reinforcing the Australian Government’s commitment to protect 30% of our land & oceans by 2030 and look forward to the Nature Repair Market launching in 2025. It was an honour to present Wilderlands alongside seven other teams selected for the hub including MCi Carbon, Xylo Systems, Reforest, AirSeed Technologies, Seabin™, Hullbot, and the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF). As part of the interactive session we shared details of our proprietary methodology as well as exploring how we’re working with partners to protect the planet through biodiversity credits as well as diving into the projects we’re helping to preserve. A massive thanks to the Nature Positive team for all the work that’s gone into making this possible; including Melissa Slarp, Emma Nash, Jo Grant, and many more. The simplest way to make a direct and lasting impact on Australia’s biodiversity.
About us
Wilderlands have developed one of the world’s first voluntary biodiversity units and created a platform to make it easy for individuals and organisations to start protecting nature today. The Biological Diversity Unit (BDU) represents a 1sqm plot of permanently-protected and actively managed land in high ecological value projects across Australia. Each unit is geotagged enabling supporters to zoom in and see the exact location of their units via their personal profile page and receive regular reports from expert ecologists on the ground and watch as nature flourishes thanks to their support. Wilderlands have developed a proprietary methodology that leverages state conservation covenant regulations as well as incorporating leading ecosystem management practices designed by ecologists to promise permanent protection and help fund the first 20 years of project management. Wilderlands currently support four projects across Australia including Coorong Lakes, Crowes Lookout, Alleena, and Budgerum. Since launching in early August 2022, Wilderlands have protected over 60,000 square metres of vulnerable ecosystems with supporters ranging from individuals through to large organisations, philanthropists and several environmental advisory groups. Wilderlands have been selected to be part of the United Nations Biodiversity Credits Alliance after being invited to attend their Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal in December. Wilderlands have also been part of the inaugural Silverstrand Biodiversity Accelerator as well as selected for the Melbourne Accelerator Program, and received coverage from major publications including the Wall Street Journal, World Economic Forum, Australian Financial Review, ABC, the Economist, Startup Daily and many more outlets. Learn how we can help you start protecting Australia's precious biodiversity today.

What an epic few weeks at Wilderlands! We’re so grateful to be part of a global community committed to protecting the planet. 🌳 Our CEO Ash Knop has shared this post acknowledging some of the people who’ve helped along the way and these individuals are so admired for the impact they’re having across different parts of the world. We also love seeing our al.ive body partnership on show and shared as a gift to the incredible Mariana Sarmiento, referred to here as the ‘Queen of COP16’ she is such a force and a dear friend of the Wilderlands community (read the case study about this product partnership below). al.ive body® x wilderlands Limited Edition Duo: https://lnkd.in/gja4NSch Momentum is rapidly building and we’re seeing a huge spike in interest around purchasing our biodiversity credits and a growing desire to understand how supporting the projects we’re working at will help protect nature, forever. The unofficial ‘Queen of COP16’ and other Cali heroes. I want to honour and acknowledge a special group of people who have inspired me (and Wilderlands) throughout #CBDCOP16 whilst making profound contributions to the outcomes of this critically important global bi-annual gathering. Mariana Sarmiento the ‘Queen of COP16’, is the Founder and CEO of Terrasos a great advocate for voluntary biodiversity credits (see #Tebu). I admire Mariana deeply for her resilience and commitment, despite the many hurdles she’s faced scaling Terrasos. As an aside, it was my pleasure to present Mariana with a ‘Wildflower Coastal Duo’ from al.ive body® for all her hard work. Candice M.D. Stevens is the founder and CEO of the Sustainable Finance Coalition in addition to a number of roles with the IUCN, ILCN and much more. Candice is a self confessed tax nerd, incentives innovator, passionate conservationist, prolific networker and super impressive operator. I’ve learned so much from our chats. James Fitzsimons wears many hats, not least of all as Senior Advisor for Global Protection Strategies at The Nature Conservancy. James’s subject matter expertise, communications skills, passion, ability to connect and influence make him one of Australia’s greatest assets in conservation, and a great conversationalist. Guy Michael Williams is known and respected by everyone. His authenticity and generosity are magnetic, and his appetite for action and outcomes are universally admired. We’re proud to call Guy a close friend and advisor. Swaroop Tulsidas is an insatiably curious and enthusiastic gent. He is a rare breed of specialist and generalist, leading a CSIRO startup bound for success and impact. Buy your ‘Swap’ stocks now before he skyrockets. Jane Hutchinson, Co-CEO of Pollination Foundation, is driven by outcomes for nature and first nations people in equal measure. Few can boast the local and global impact she has facilitated through her unique blend of knowledge, experience, passion, grace and focus. Finally, rarely does a single 15 minute conversation leave one with such a lasting impression. Thank you Gareth Jenkins, Global Creative Lead at EY, for the way in which you’re using story and consciousness to make change, both in and through your organisation. Thank you all for making me make the most of this important moment for nature and humanity. Heath Evans

Grateful to be an ANZ guest & represent Wilderlands at the AER Summit Gala Dinner last night. A big thanks to Daniel Ota for extending the invitation to the Annual Emissions Reduction Summit and providing the chance to hear from brilliant speakers including Jo Tyndall and Pastor Ray Minniecon during the evening. During the day I had the opportunity to spend time with the team at Sensand who are a startup you definitely need on your radar, led by the brilliant Peter Moulton who has a passion and focus that only the very best founders possess. Hosted by the Carbon Market Institute (CMI) this event is jam packed with quality speakers and I’m looking forward to the Day 2 schedule staring kicking off shortly. . https://lnkd.in/g-x22HC7

Can you spot the Plains-wanderer in this picture? This tiny bird's incredible camouflage is one of the reasons our Wilderlands team recently ventured to our Budgerum project equipped with thermal cameras, head torches and spotlights as part of our monitoring for a range of species who are best seen after dark. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/ghtjQ9-E Wilderlands Lead Ecologist Deanna Marshall was joined by Dan Nugent - a renowned Plains-wanderer expert who knows more than most about one of the rarest species of bird in the world which we believe may exist at the property. Over the past two years we’ve been implementing a plan to monitor for the presence of the Plains-wanderer. Activities have included the installation of Wildlife Song Metres in 2023, programmed to record wildlife sounds for one hour at both dawn and dusk and designed to capture the Plains-wanderer call with females known to vocalise primarily during the spring season. This night time spot lighting expedition forms part of the monitoring acknowledging how effective these creatures are at camouflage making them impossible to spot during the day, so after dark is essential. Within these grasslands are also vulnerable fauna species including the Fat-tailed Dunnart (a small native carnivorous marsupial mouse) who is largely nocturnal to avoid the many predators active during the day including the Brown Goshawk, Brown Falcon and Black-Shouldered Kite. For the Wilderlands conservation team, the night provides the perfect conditions for thermal monitoring with the cooling of the air helping the animals body temperature become a beacon on the thermal scope devices. The process for this monitoring technique involves ground truthing suitable habitat in daylight hours, waiting until darkness arrives, then walking slowly a few metres apart, through areas of habitat that were determined earlier. Visit the story of our website to see all the species the team spotted and connect with our team if you'd like to learn more about Wilderlands. From Farm to COP16… A taste of innovative finance solutions for habitant protection around the world. Great seeing Paul Dettmann, Managing Director of Wilderlands & Cassinia Environmental, share the #CBDCOP16 stage with global titans of the habitant protection sector. As a sixth generation farmer who has placed biodiversity protection at the heart of more than 120 landscape scale projects over the past 25 years, Paul is an authority on the subject of land management for nature outcomes through innovative conservation finance. One prime example is Wilderlands’ Biological Diversity Unit #BDU which funds the permanent protection and active management of vulnerable Australian habitat, one square metre at a time. A big thanks to Mariana Sarmiento and Terrasos for hosting this important session and for the incredible work you’re doing with #Tebu in Colombia and Latin America.

How does Wilderlands handle prickly pests? Whilst we talk a lot about the many species that can be found at our projects; unfortunately not all of them are welcome. A prime example of this work in action can be found at our Coorong Lakes project. Across much of southern Australia, especially in the south-eastern states, African Boxthorn (Lycium ferocissimum) is a major issue for both farmers and conservation managers alike and tackling this Weed of National Significance (WONS) is a priority across the Coorong Lakes property. Aptly named, this woody weed is indeed ‘ferocious’, often forming impenetrable spiny thickets that can invade remnant bushland. Its woody spines can even puncture a car tyre! At the Coorong the fight to control this noxious weed sits predominantly in the hands of the dynamic duo of Robert and Adonis - a father-in-law combo who have worked consistently to remove this threat from the property. The management of the African Boxthorn on the property requires cutting the stem and immediately treating the cut stem with herbicide. Sometimes large plants re-shoot and have to be re-treated. Treated plants are left in-situ, even when dead, as the spiny branches can provide protection for lizards and small birds. These noxious woody weeds are a member of the tomato family (Solanaceae) and can reach up to 5 metres in height, with the many-branched thorny stems reaching the ground. As African Boxthorn is classified as a Weed of National Significance, its removal is a priority action in relevant Conservation Management Plans. It is also actively managed at our Budgerum Grasslands and Alleena projects, as well as at the Coorong. Read more about the work we're doing to tackle this noxious weed via the article below. 👉 | https://lnkd.in/g4zR5HTE Ash Knop, Paul Dettmann, Deanna Marshall, Heath Evans, Nopera Whitley, Cody Rees
