Updates

  • A member of the public was surprised to find a visibly distressed young ringtail possum clinging to their hot water heater, after being alerted to it by their barking dog. Concerned for its safety, they contacted WIRES for assistance. WIRES Volunteer Erin arrived and found it with no apparent injuries. After carefully securing the frightened and trembling joey, a thorough assessment confirmed it was healthy and active despite the ordeal. Following a full search there was no sign of its mother nearby, so she transported it to experienced WIRES carer Brittany, where it will receive expert care until being ready for release back into its local habitat. 💚

  • It is not uncommon for a family of ducks to cross a busy road in search for greener pastures. On Sunday morning, a member of the public reported such a case to WIRES, while also witnessing two ducklings fall into a storm water drain. Coordinates and photos were sent through to assist in locating the exact site. WIRES Volunteer Helen arrived on the scene equipped with high visibility vest, a net and an animal carrier, and began searching along the roadside. However, no ducklings were initially found. It soon became apparent that the maze of pipe-works beneath the road could have led them further away. When the traffic finally subsided, faint peeping sounds were heard from the bushy median strip. These sounds directed Helen to a central drain, where ten wood ducklings were found huddled together deep inside. The bolts on the drain's grate made it impossible to reach them directly, so the RFS were called in to assist. The gas emissions were tested to ensure the safety of rescuers, and once cleared, the bolts were removed, and the grates carefully lifted. The exit pipes below were securely covered to prevent the ducklings from escaping deeper into the pipework. All ten ducklings were safely removed from the drain. Unfortunately, the parent wood ducks were not seen or heard in the area. The ducklings are now in Helen's care and, once old enough, will be soft released into a safer environment far from busy roads. 💚

  • Celebrating National Eucalypt Day 🌿 Eucalypts are the backbone of Australia’s landscapes, spanning over 101 million hectares and providing essential habitat for countless native species. With more than 800 species, these trees are vital to the survival of wildlife, including those in WIRES care. Sourcing fresh eucalypt leaves and flowers is crucial for rehabilitating sick, injured, and orphaned animals. However, it’s becoming harder due to escalating urbanisation and land clearing. That’s why WIRES is working with councils to plant and maintain sustainable food sources. Recently, WIRES volunteers joined Wollondilly Council and local community members to plant a variety of eucalypts, ensuring a future food supply for wildlife in care. We're also working with Sutherland Shire and Muswellbrook Councils on tree-planting initiatives—and we’re keen to collaborate with more councils to support native wildlife. 🌱💚

  • To feed or not to feed? While it may seem like a kind gesture, WIRES advises against feeding native birds for several crucial reasons. Read to understand the impact artificial feeding can have on their health, behavior, and the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Native birds thrive best on their natural diet – let's keep them happy and healthy in their environment! 💚

  • We are excited to share that WIRES was awarded a second grant from Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (FNPW) under their NSW Curb Wombat Mange Program.   The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has partnered with the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (FNPW) to provide targeted funding of up to $2 million to the New South Wales volunteer wildlife rehabilitation sector and Aboriginal community organisations to purchase and use the approved chemicals and equipment needed to treat mange in free-living wombats.   The grant will be used to purchase medication and treatment supplies, like burrow flaps. Having appropriate equipment allows us to continue to safely provide specialised treatment for mange affected wombats in their natural environment.   For more information, please visit the "Curb Wombat Mange Program'' page. ⤵️ https://ow.ly/3i2x50VjEg3.   #fnpw #wildlife https://ow.ly/VMAp50VjEg4

  • Thank You for Helping Impacted Wildlife 💚 WIRES is deeply grateful to everyone who reached out to report native wildlife injured, orphaned, or displaced by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Since the cyclone’s landfall last Saturday, WIRES Emergency Responders Kyana and Erin have been on the ground rescuing birds, bats, macropods, and reptiles impacted by the storm. They’ve also worked alongside WIRES volunteers, helping transport wildlife and deliver critical supplies to carers. Between our Emergency Response Team and dedicated volunteers, WIRES has carried out over 150 rescues. Meanwhile, our 24/7 Wildlife Rescue Office has responded to hundreds of calls, providing advice and support. This incredible collective effort wouldn’t be possible without you, and we’re truly grateful for your support. With conditions now easing, our Emergency Responders have been advised to return home. A number of flood warnings are still in place for Clarence, Orara and Richmond Rivers.
