Inside Macquarie Group’s new world-class headquarters, colour and landscape work hand-in-hand to connect the daily staff experience to Country, and to each other. The journey through the building features native landscaping both indoors and outdoors. In-ground planting is strategically placed at thresholds to strengthen the connection to Country and symbolise a transition from earth to sky. As staff and visitors continue through the space, they’re invited into the rich, red heart of the building, with its earthy colour palette. In contrast, the central atrium is traversed via a striking steel stair in ‘Sydney Blue’, evoking the city’s skyline and harbour. Spanning all work floors, the stairs encourage informal interaction and open sight lines across the building for better connectivity. As design lead we thank our diverse range of specialists that collaborated on this project: Lendlease, JPW, Rapt Studio, Yerrabingin Pty Ltd, BALARINJI, Hecker Guthrie, Cox Architecture,ASPECT Studios, THERE, The Big Group, Steensen Varming, Electrolight for their combined expertise. #Sydney #Workplace Photos by Alicia Taylor

  • It was an amazing honour to speak to Jasmax one of Aotearoa leading design companies, about the correlation of biocultural design between our practices. The incredible cultural experience that my sisters Anahera Rawiri and Elisapeta Heta have in sharing their Fenua/land has been an amazing privilege. Also a shoutout and thank you to Chris Rogers, Principal in Australia for bringing me over.

“We walk together to amplify the powerful language of Country for the betterment of our collective future.” We recently had the privilege of hosting Christian Hampson, CEO and co-founder of Yerrabingin Pty Ltd, in our Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland studio for an inspiring discussion about our unique approaches to bicultural design and designing with Country from different sides of the Tasman. Based in Sydney, Yerrabingin – meaning ‘we walk together’ – is a visionary multi-disciplinary design studio dedicated to enriching society through designing with Country and connecting people to place. Christian aims to disrupt conventional methods of addressing Indigenous disadvantage and create intercultural opportunities for future generations to thrive. Yerrabingin delivers environmentally conscious native landscapes and placemaking designs enriched with Indigenous narratives. It was a great pleasure to explore the shared values between Yerrabingin’s approach and our own cultural design practice. Christian’s commitment to traditional custodianship, connecting people to Country and his forward-thinking approach to regenerative design outcomes that support socially inclusive, sustainable and resilient communities resonated deeply with us. We look forward to continuing this inspiring conversation with Christian and his talented team.
