In the latest instalment of our ‘Team Streets’ series, where we spotlight members of the Youth Off The Streets team, we meet phoebe saunders. Phoebe started working for the organisation on a casual basis two years ago, assisting with the coordination of our annual fundraising event, Lipstick Luncheon. We couldn’t let her go, and she is now the friendly voice you hear on the end of any calls to donate to our services and programs as our Supporter Care Coordinator. “I’d love for people to know how rewarding working for Youth Off The Streets is,” Phoebe says when reflecting on her career in the not-for-profit sector. “We have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the positive impact our programs have on young people. It's truly inspiring to see these children and young people flourish and receive the support they rightfully deserve.” What is the best advice you were given as a child or young person? “This too, shall pass.” It's a comforting reminder that change is a constant part of life, and it encourages patience and resilience during challenging times.” What are some soft skills you’ve learned when speaking to supporters on the phone? “Listen – sometimes it’s just nice to be heard. Many of us talk too much, but perhaps we have two ears and only one mouth for a reason.” What is one of your hopes for the children and young people Youth Off The Streets supports? “One of my hopes for the children and young people Youth Off The Streets supports is that they find a sense of belonging and self-worth. “By providing a safe and nurturing environment, we aim to empower them to overcome their challenges, discover their potential, and build a brighter future. Our goal is to help them develop the skills and confidence they need to lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to their communities.”
Youth Off The Streets
Individual and Family Services
Our programs provide young people in need with safety, support and opportunities to build a positive future.
About us
Youth Off The Streets is a not-for-profit youth organisation. We work with young people, their families and communities to create safety, offer support and provide opportunities to build a positive future. Since being founded by Father Chris Riley in 1991, we have grown to deliver a range of wraparound supports for young people. These include crisis accommodation and housing services, independent high schools, alcohol and other drugs counselling, youth justice support, life skills and employment programs, cultural support and community engagement, among other services. We are a non-denominational organisation with a focus on early interventions that empower young people and strengthen communities.

“A lot of people I was in children’s refuges with grow up hiding what happened to them,” Emery says. “They never feel comfortable opening up, even when it’s such a big part of who they are.” “Youth homelessness is such a massive, common issue that’s important to talk about – so, by telling my story, I want to help others who are in my situation.” Emery is one of our former National Scholarship Program recipients and a professional figure skater. At the age of 16, he experienced homelessness after going through a family breakdown, moving between refuges, public housing and rental accommodation as he tried to balance work and school with his training schedule. Through his scholarship, Emery was able to buy the books and stationery he needed for his TAFE course, and he also gained a mentor and a skating coach - both of whom are encouraging him on his journey to be selected for the 2030 Winter Olympics team. “It’s a bit of a stretch, but I always aim high and stick to my goals,” Emery explains. “I feel like the journey of getting there, of attempting to get there, is more important than actually getting there.” Applications for our 2025 National Scholarship Program are now open. This National Puppy Day, we're celebrating our favourite four-legged friend: Kobe! 🐶🐾 Kobe is a qualified wellbeing dog at The Lakes College (TLC) in Blue Haven. Every day, he offers his own TLC to the students - alleviating their anxiety, helping them to self-regulate and giving affection to those who need it the most. Here's what Year 10 student Holly* had to say about Kobe's support in the classroom. "Kobe is the reason I come to school every day. "He greets me in a circle with a big smile and cuddle and I instantly feel better. He keeps me in a positive headspace at school. "Kobe sits on my lap while I'm doing my schoolwork which for some reason helps me focus. He is like my own weighted blanket. When I need a minute, I take a breather, pet him and give him a cuddle. "This is his job; he gets paid with love and cuddles and he loves it!" To learn more about Kobe's role at Youth Off The Streets, click here: https://ow.ly/amO650VhJWv

Last month we highlighted the difference that alternative education can make in the lives of vulnerable children and young people. Now, in the lead-up to Youth Homelessness Matters Day in April, we’re turning our attention to the issue of youth homelessness in Australia. Why? 🙍♂️ Nearly 40,000 young people sought homelessness support last year 🏠 Key causes of youth homelessness are domestic and family violence, poverty and the housing crisis 🛋 Common forms of youth homelessness include living in overcrowded homes or supported accommodation and couch surfing 🧠 Almost half of all young people experiencing homelessness report poor mental health and psychological distress 💵 Youth homelessness costs Australia over $626 million each year Click here to learn more: https://ow.ly/cwK550VfkPm

"I thought there was no more worthy charity than to help kids who didn't receive the opportunities that I did. I know that all the money that is donated is spent wisely in helping young people overcome obstacles not of their making." Eugene is a cherished Youth Off The Streets community member, having supported Youth Off The Streets for over 30 years. Recently, Eugene heard about our inaugural Resilience Ride and saw it as the catalyst that he needed to get back on the bike again a hiatus after injury. He loves riding, and in his prime would ride every weekend around his local neighbourhood. A month into training for the Ride, he invited his daughter, Rebecca, to join him. "I couldn't say no," Rebecca says - despite not at all being a cyclist. "When your dad asks you to spend time prepping a ride, it is more than a ride or donation to charity. It's about sharing an experience with someone you love doing something you know they love." Their first training session together was Eugene yelling out when to change gears at Rebecca, and laps around the same block to ensure her safety on the road - they've now progressed to tackling 43 kilometres together in the one sprint. Inspired, Rebecca's husband John is now contemplating joining the Ride. Our inaugural Resilience Ride is this May 15-17 in Orange, New South Wales - get your family together and join us: https://lnkd.in/gCET-Xd5

Going once, going twice, sold! 🫰💸 Last month, our friends at the Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW) took part in the first round of the Novice Auctioneering Competition #NAC2025. The competition brought together the very best would-be and up-and-coming auctioneers. Together, they battled it out in the name of charity - and raised over $3,000 for Youth Off The Streets. This money will contribute towards REINSW's fundraising goals for 2025. Their support will, in turn, provide vital support to children and young people who are facing homelessness, substance misuse and mental health challenges. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this important cause. Stay tuned for more events throughout the year!

Last week we were delighted to welcome Federal Minister for the Environment and Water and Member for Sydney, Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, to our Alexandria office to learn more about our work. With our CEO Judy Barraclough, Minister Tanya Plibersek heard from caseworkers from our youth homelessness services team, who shared their expertise and experiences of working with children and young people. The Minister's visit followed the recent announcement that Youth Off The Streets would participate in the Federal government's Youth Empowerment Program, receiving funds over the next two years 'based on a demonstrated commitment to the community and supporting young people at risk of engaging in the criminal justice system.'

According to the latest Census, children and young people aged 12 to 24 make up an alarming 23% of Australia's total homeless population. Additionally, disconnection from school is on the rise among children and young people experiencing disadvantage, and growing numbers of First Nations young people are in need of culturally responsive support. Here are just a few of the ambitions we hold for the next few years - and through the link, how we plan on achieving them: https://ow.ly/tBaC50VewCj
