10,000 Defence Industry jobs coming to Western Australia. The Western Australian Government has signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Department of Defence that will result in one of the largest federal government investments in the State’s history.   The Federal Government will establish a Defence Precinct within the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) at Henderson, and in doing so, will bring nuclear submarine depot-level maintenance to Western Australia.   Depot-level maintenance, the process whereby nuclear submarines are removed from the water and repaired and maintained in a dry environment for sometimes up to two years at a time, is the most valuable part of a submarine’s life-cycle. It is anticipated that this work will employ 3,000 direct shipbuilding jobs, and many more indirect jobs.   This establishes Western Australia as the largest nuclear submarine sustainment and maintenance hub in the Southern Hemisphere.   Through the Cooperation Agreement, both the State and the Commonwealth have committed to supporting continuous naval shipbuilding and submarine sustainment in Western Australia.   This marks a major milestone on the AUKUS pathway as Australia develops the capability to safely and securely own, operate and sustain conventionally‑armed, nuclear‑powered submarines.   The addition of large-vessel infrastructure at the AMC will also revolutionise the surface fleet build and sustainment capabilities. With a continuous naval shipbuilding pipeline secured this year for the first time in the State’s history, the ability to launch and dock the Army’s Landing Craft Medium and Landing Craft Heavy, alongside the Royal Australian Navy’s new General Purpose Frigates and Large Optionally-crewed Surface Vessels, will revolutionise the shipbuilding business in Western Australia. The USS Hawaii’s arrival into HMAS Stirling signals an exciting time for WA’s naval shipbuilding and submarine sustainment industry.   This US Virginia class submarine will undergo significant repairs and maintenance right here in Western Australia. This is an important milestone as part of the AUKUS agreement, and is the first time this kind of work has been performed in Australia.   Over the next fortnight, 36 Australian Navy personnel will help lead the maintenance of USS Hawaii. The US submarine tender USS Emory S. Land will assist with these efforts, bringing with it the specialised skills and technology needed to perform this highly technical work.

🚀 The WA Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ASC Pty Ltd to bolster the local AUKUS workforce and industry base! 🌏 ✍️ WA Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia CSC and Acting Minister for Training and Workforce Development Hannah Beazley MLA signed the MOU to promote and develop the Western Australian defence industry. This initiative supports the sustainment of Australia’s conventional and nuclear-powered submarines, delivered as part of the AUKUS trilateral partnership. ASC is a Commonwealth Government Business Enterprise, that built and now sustains the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarine fleet. ASC has been selected as the sovereign submarine partner for Australia’s conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) and will jointly build the AUKUS SSNs in Australia. Minister Papalia highlighted the opportunity the MOU presents for WA, stating, “Western Australia is about to realise a monumental opportunity to expand and diversify its economy through the growth of our defence industry." 📝 The MOU focuses on integrating WA SMEs into the ASC supply chain and developing a skilled workforce for submarine sustainment. Minister Beazley emphasised the state’s commitment to training and workforce development, supported by the WA Defence Industry Workforce Development Plan 2022–27 and a $35 million investment to ensure a pipeline of skilled workers. This MOU positions WA to maximise the economic benefits of the AUKUS program, leveraging the state’s strategic location as Australia’s Indian Ocean capital and gateway to AUKUS. 🌊⚓ #DefenceIndustry #AUKUS #WesternAustralia #ASC
