As part of the prestigious Energy Community Summer School program, FES SOE is offering specialized energy journalism and energy communication training for the fourth year in a row! We invite all interested journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey to apply for the fourth generation of Energy Summer School 2024 - Energy Journalism Program, which will take place in Chisinau, Moldova, from 19th to 28th of July 2024. Dennis Hesseling delivered an insightful presentation on natural gas, followed by a discussion on hydrogen prospects by Julian Reul from H2 Global Foundation. Representing diverse cultural and professional backgrounds in the energy sector, they embark on a comprehensive and intensive week of learning focused on energy, decarbonisation, and geopolitics. 🙌 Hosted by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Moldova at the Technical University of Moldova in Chisinau, participants from the Energy Community, EU, Canada, and Turkey will forge long-term connections, exchange ideas, and network after a weekend of exploring Moldova’s unique attributes. For our last check-in from our stay in Astypalea, we are bringing you a voice from the community! 🌿 Talking with us was Lambrini Grigori, a born and raised Astypalean and the Dean of Astypalea's Gymnasium. Like many islanders, she has spent the majority of her life in the community, with the exception of her university studies. Lamrini shared that, as with most novelties, people were skeptical at first about projects related to sustainability and e-mobility. However, external stakeholders and the local government ensured that the people were well informed about what was going on. 🤔 Reflecting on the introduction of e-mobility to Astypalea, she said: "This was a chance to show that although we are a small island and far apart from central Greece, we can become a role model. They explained to the people what this project is about, which helped us understand what it could bring to the island. Of course, we are a very small place, so we need to be very aware of the progress made because we want to maintain our traditional character, our picturesque island—we don't want this to change." 🔹️We believe that energy transition must be an inclusive process, not only a just one. This also means addressing concerns and working towards a shared vision - and that is why communities deserve a spotlight of their own. Our stay in Astypalea was largely influenced by AstyMove, a unique approach to e-mobility on the island. 🚙 The project offers two possibilities for users: renting individual e-cars or e-bikes, and a car-sharing service called AstyBus. 🌿 Through a mobile app, users can select their service, add a payment card, and pay per use. The idea behind the project is to enable sustainable transportation, powered by clean energy, for both tourists and locals. The initiative is particularly well-loved among the older residents of the island. Overall support for the project increased by 25% among island residents in just the first two years, according to the organization K2 Development Organisation of South Aegean Region SA, which is implementing the AstyBus project. 🤝 When we asked our hosts, from the mayor to the locals, what best practice from the island they would like to export to others, including the city of Athens, the unanimous answer was AstyMove and e-mobility! #emobility #astybus #sustainabletransport #fes4et #justtransition

Hello from Astypalea, the butterfly of the Aegean! 🌊🦋 Not only is this island well known for its history and traditional architecture, but it is also on its path to becoming the first carbon-neutral, sustainable Greek island! Driving this change is a community committed to, first and foremost, preserving the nature and beauty of the island itself. In these efforts, Astypalea is the first in implementing e-mobility projects, advocating participatory planning projects that include the citizens, and expanding on other projects that will bring Astypalea closer to the 100% RES (renewable energy sources) vision! 🌿 FES Athens, Croatia, and Dialogue SOE are on Astypalea for 2 days to encourage best practice exchange among similar communities, EcoIslands, as a follow-up to last year's exchange we had in Croatia. We have already heard great inputs on Croatia's path to 100% RES, best practices of energy communities, and all the different energy transition projects run on Astypalea. 🔹️In the words of Astypalea's mayor, Nikolaos Komineas: "We are not pioneers in thinking; we don't need to think about this first, but we are pioneers in doing!"
