With 24 partners from 11 countries, ReNEW is developing innovative solutions to ensure that IWT can thrive despite the impacts of climate change. By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as Digital Twins and creating a Green Resilient IWT Dataspace, ReNEW aims to increase infrastructure resilience and support the EU's goal of a 20% modal shift to waterways.   • 📢 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼-𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆-𝗗𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 (𝗭𝗘-𝗛𝗗𝗩): 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 & 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗭𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗦 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 The ZEFES General Assembly and Stakeholder Symposium in Gothenburg brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including logistics companies and shippers such as Colruyt Group, Gebruder Weiss, Gruber, Grupo Sese, Primafrio and Procter & Gamble, leading automotive companies such as Volvo Trucks, Ford, Renault Trucks and Scania, technology providers such as PTV, AVL, Robert Bosch GmbH, TNO, Fraunhofer, VUB and ZF Systems, key infrastructure providers such as Hitachi and Air Products, and stakeholders networks and associations such as IRU, CLECAT, UIC, ALICE and POLIS. This forum addressed the key challenges in scaling up for Zero Emission Heavy Duty Vehicles (ZE-HDV) across Europe. 🚛 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 During the infrastructure panel, moderated by Stefanie Van Damme, Deputy Programme Manager and Technical Lead TG1: Efficient and low emission assets and energy of ALICE (https://lnkd.in/ecGBa6-a), experts highlighted 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. The most pressing issues include: 🔹 Scalability of hydrogen and electric infrastructure solutions to meet future demand. 🔹 Interoperability of protocols for seamless operation between different systems. 🔹 The alignment of energy demand with grid capacity to ensure technical and financial feasibility. The panel, with contributions from Air Products, Milence, Hitachi and ESPORG, emphasised the urgency of overcoming these hurdles to enable efficient and widespread deployment of ZE-HDV solutions. 🚚 The ZEFES project is enabling battery and fuel cell electric heavy-duty vehicles to travel over 700 km per charge or refuel, with real-world demonstrations starting in 2025. Achieving this requires robust infrastructure and a rethink of logistics models. To support the ZE-HDV long haul rollout, the focus is now shifting to creating scalable infrastructure solutions, ensuring faster approval processes and optimising energy grid integration. The insights gained during the symposium will play a fundamental role in shaping the next steps as ZEFES moves towards its demonstration phase in 2025. Elvina NOWAK from ALICE supported by Sonia Giovinazzi, PhD (ENEA) and Orestis Tsolakis (Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH)/HIT), presented how CRISTAL is driving digital transformation of the EU's inland waterway transport sector, in line with UNECE recent initiatives such as the Strategy on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Inland Transport and the Climate Action Plan adopted in February 2024. The workshop focused on strategies and projects that promote the digitalisation and decarbonisation of IWT. Participants included representatives from Transport Ministries, waterway administrations, the European Commission, River Commissions, and other key stakeholders. CRISTAL’s participation provided an opportunity to demonstrate its role in enhancing the attractiveness and efficiency of inland navigation, using innovative technologies and collaborative models to integrate waterways into multimodal logistics chains. During the session, Elvina Nowak addressed a question: 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑈𝑁𝐸𝐶𝐸 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑅𝐼𝑆𝑇𝐴𝐿 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡? She highlighted the importance of UNECE’s role in promoting 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 across Europe, which would facilitate the seamless digital integration of IWT. She also advocated for 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 to make IWT more attractive compared to other modes of transport, emphasising the need for incentives and frameworks that encourage investment in IWT infrastructure and digital systems. CRISTAL, funded by Horizon Europe, aims to shift 20% of freight traffic to IWT by integrating it with synchromodal transport systems. Its focus on improving the resilience and reliability of inland waterways aligns well with UNECE's broader goals for a greener and more digitalised transport sector.   • 💿 Last week, ALICE attended the DISCO Project General Assembly in Köln, Germany. The two days were filled with exchanges between the living labs and the Impact Creation Board for Transformation experts, Anne Goodchild, Marianne Ryghaug, Andreas Nettsträter, Thomas Osdoba. ALICE participated in the different workshops and presented the list of Key Exploitable Results of the DISCO project.   • 🌟 ALICE team visits the Port de Barcelona: A hub and ecosystem of innovation in the blue economy, digital, energy and port-city interaction. Today, the ALICE team had the opportunity to visit the Port of Barcelona, where we explored the state-of-the-art BlueTechPort and Pier01 start-ups and innovation hubs. First-hand work being done to promote sustainability and innovation in port logistics including 5G, AI related innovations as well as cold ironing to provide ships with onshore electricity and green corridors were part of the conversation. We would like to thank Carles Rúa Costa, Chief Innovation Officer of the Port of Barcelona, and his team for their warm welcome and comprehensive and informative presentation. The insights shared during our visit were of value, particularly in demonstrating how the Port is driving advances in the blue economy and fostering collaboration with innovative start-ups at BlueTechPort. The Port of Barcelona's commitment to driving digitalisation, decarbonisation and sustainable growth is inspiring.
