WATERBORNE is as an industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders

About us

WATERBORNE has been set up as an industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a continuous dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders, such as classification societies, shipbuilders, shipowners, maritime equipment manufacturers, infrastructure and service providers, universities or research institutes, and with the EU Institutions, including Member States. The strategic objectives of the WATERBORNE TP are: - Establish a continuous dialogue between all stakeholders in the waterborne transport sector and in other waterborne-related sectors on R&D; - Contribute to the widest possible consensus regarding R&D and to focusing of efforts and resources; - Develop a common medium- and long-term R&D Vision and a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA); - Contribute to the appropriate mobilisation and allocation of the necessary financial resources (private/regional/national/EU sources); - Contribute to the social expectations regarding clean, competitive and safe waterborne transport as well as regarding other waterborne-related activities, including education and training. For WATERBORNE to reach its goals, it is necessary to engage all relevant stakeholders of the European maritime industry, such as classification societies, manufacturers, research institutes, shipyards, shipowners, or universities, as well as the European Institutions and Member States. This approach should ensure that, whilst national policies will vary according to particular challenges, effective mechanisms are developed to enable adequate research coordination and cooperation between the relevant stakeholders at EU/EEA level.

The European Inland Waterway Transport Platform is the next one in the spotlight as part of our social media campaign "Meet our members". Inland waterway transport (IWT) is a highly professional, safe, cost efficient and competitive mode of transport. It is also known for its positive environmental record. The IWT sector makes significant progress towards achieving climate neutrality and resilience. Innovation and energy transition present major challenges for the sector, which is committed to meet the EU and global climate goals. However, at this stage, the sector is lacking solutions in both the broad deployment of new technologies and the sufficient availability of alternative fuels including the necessary infrastructure along the entire network of European waterways. Besides, there are hardly any business cases as clients are reluctant to pay for “greening investments”. The transition pathway however will require huge investments to realise the energy transition in the entire sector. Obviously, this requires a strategy to take the right and “no regret” investment decision. For the IWT sector it is crucial to have access to the various Research &Development support programs and to define the right funding conditions. The European Inland Waterway Transport Platform as the executive body of the European Barge Union (EBU) and the European Skippers Organisation (ESO) provides knowledge and expertise to EU regulatory bodies on all matters of importance to the IWT sector. Theresia Hacksteiner, Executive Director of the European IWT Platform and Board member of the WaterborneTP: “The WaterborneTP is considered as a very important interlocutor between the waterborne industries and the European Commission and to support the sector in its future challenges. As a board member I for this purpose am pleased to contribute to the development of the future strategies and framework conditions of the Waterborne TP”.

Danish waterborne sector plays a key role enabling the transition towards a resilient, competitive, and sustainable waterborne sector WaterborneTP met with representatives of the Danish waterborne sector to discuss RD&I building blocks ensuring future success. Eero Lehtovaara: Whilst the transition to zero-emission waterborne transport is a key priority for all, a coordinated approach towards digitalisation was emphasized as well. Furthermore, to be able to timely retrofit and/or replace the current worldwide fleet (both inland waterway transport and maritime transport), there is likely to be a need for RD&I as regards capacity and capability building. Jenny Braat: It has been a great pleasure to welcome The Waterborne Technology Platform here in Denmark. The Danish maritime industry is moving in an increasingly high-tech and digital direction. We're seeing a global market that, on one hand, is developing rapidly but, on the other, is marked by many different interests—not all of which support our shared goal: achieving climate-neutral global shipping within a generation. We're focused on finding new solutions, both for newly built ships and for upgrading the existing fleet, but we're also keen on ensuring a level playing field with global regulations and consistent, effective enforcement. Strengthening Europe's position together is a huge advantage, and from Denmark's side, we're happy to contribute.” Full press release is available here: https://lnkd.in/e2nDN59P #HorizonEU #EUPartnerships Eero Lehtovaara, Alexander Enström, Maria Boile, Andreas Nordseth, Jan-Christoph Napierski, Christian Schlette, Maja Novaković , Jenny Braat, Marcus Duch, Christian Føhrby, Danske Maritime (Danish Maritime)

Elias Yfantis to coordinate update of the Strategic Research Agenda of the WaterborneTP The missions and visions 2030 and 2050 of the Waterborne Technology Platform will be updated, in alignment with the political priorities of the new European Commission. To coordinate this process, Elias Yfantis, has been appointed rapporteur by the Board of the Association. ELIAS YFANTIS, Director of Research Excellence Assurance at CMMI - Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute: It is an honour to coordinate the update of the Strategic Research Agenda, which will shape the future research, development, and innovation priorities of the WaterborneTP. While the current agenda remains largely valid, its timelines require revision. Additionally, emerging needs within the waterborne transport sector may need to be incorporated. This process also provides an opportunity to align the research areas identified in the 2019 Strategic Research Agenda more closely with the industrial base of the Waterborne Technology Platform. By doing so, we will be better positioned to define the missions and visions that will drive sustainable competitiveness in the European waterborne sector through RD&I. Eero Lehtovaara: The Waterborne TP strongly believes in a coordinated approach towards research, development and innovation priorities of the waterborne sector. Thereby, the broad involvement of stakeholders is key. As a starting point, the team working on the update of the Strategic Research Agenda will consult the members of the Association in different ways, followed by an outreach to all relevant public and private stakeholders. Buy in to the Strategic Research Agenda by the broader sector will be key. The press release is available here: https://lnkd.in/gWD4d9DY
