  • Day Two of the S1000D & IPS User Forum has been a huge success! A heartfelt thank you to all our participants, sponsors, and exhibitors for making today so impactful. We had perspectives from leading executives, gained insights from flagship projects, and heard invaluable lessons from real-world S1000D and S-Series implementations. From the S-Series deployment on the Airbus Helicopter HIL (H160M) to the adoption of IPS specifications for the Italian Navy Submarines, and lessons from the KF-21 fighter jet, today was filled with inspiring discussions. In today’s opening presentation by Martin S., Pioneering Tomorrow: Shaping the Future of IPS, we explored how multi-domain combat demands seamless system-of-systems operations, and the need for IPS standards to evolve to meet these challenges. We can’t wait for the next two days as we continue shaping the future of IPS! S1000D #IPS #SSeries #IPSUserForum #Aerospace #Defence

  • The highly anticipated 2024 S1000D & IPS User Forum opened in Brussels today – bringing together global experts and industry leaders to shape the future of Integrated Product Support. Kicking off the event, ASD Secretary General Jan Pie highlighted the critical role of S-Series specifications in advancing Integrated Product Support across aerospace, defence, and beyond. In his opening remarks, Jan Pie emphasised the importance for seamless communication, collaboration, and system integration in our industries, positioning the S-Series as the cornerstone of these efforts. By breaking down barriers between platforms and enabling systems to “speak the same language,” the specifications enhance interoperability, improve performance, and drive innovation in high-complexity sectors. Jan Pie pointed to the S-Series as a foundation for fostering trust and collaboration between public and private stakeholders, keeping projects on track and ensuring a shared vision of success. The forum continues to serve as a key platform for advancing these standards. Jan Pie shared two important updates – ➡️ the revamp of the S-Series websites s-series.org ➡️ new cooperation agreements with the Japanese aerospace industry through MoUs signed with the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies (SJAC). This growing global collaboration underscores the continued evolution of the S-Series and S1000D communities. Stay tuned for more insights from the event! https://lnkd.in/eh-kSGDK #S1000D #IPS #SSeries #IPSUserForum #Aerospace #Defence

  • Buying military equipment abroad poses risks to Europe’s security. Between February 2022 and mid-2023, defence procurement from outside Europe accounted for 75% of new orders publicly announced in the EU. The predominance of non-European defence purchases has ramifications for the security of European countries: ➡️ Reduced security of supply: dependence on non-European suppliers exposes European countries to the evolving foreign policy agendas of third countries and the commercial priorities and production capacities of their industries. ➡️  Limitations in equipment customisation: buying abroad constraints European defence ministries in tailoring equipment to specific requirements. It also impedes system-level understanding and hinders flexibility in modifications, upgrades, and integration with European-made equipment. ➡️ Loss of operational freedom: foreign-made products may be subject to operational or export restrictions which curtail European armed forces' operational autonomy and European governments strategic/political autonomy. ➡️ Renouncement of technological sovereignty: by forgoing European development programmes and relying on off-the-shelf procurements, European countries relinquish technological sovereignty and diminish their strategic and political influence. ➡️ Challenges for co-development efforts: the lack of a critical mass of European systems limits the basis for any future co-development efforts in the framework of European collaboration. ➡️ Economic impact: procurement of non-European equipment entails adverse economic consequences in Europe, including the loss of highly skilled jobs, supply chains fragility, and reduced innovation capacity. • Buying military equipment abroad endangers Europe’s defence industry. In the two years following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine the predominance of non-European suppliers in Europe reached a new peak. Between February 2022 and mid-2023, acquisitions from outside Europe accounted for 75% of new orders publicly announced in the EU. Preference for non-European products has a series of interrelated negative effects on Europe’s defence industry. ➡️ Diminished market position. By procuring non-European products, European governments weaken the market position of European companies while bolstering the position of non-European counterparts in Europe. ➡️ Loss of revenue and investment capacity. Due to reduced domestic demand, European defence firms lose possible revenues. This, in turn, constrains their ability to invest in critical areas such as research and development (R&D) and production capacity enhancement. ➡️ Missed economies of scale. Where an alternative European product already exists, the decision to buy non-European reduces the potential production volumes. This hinders European producers from capitalising on economies of scale and inhibits cost efficiencies. ➡️ Heightened export dependency. The less European producers sell in Europe, the more they must rely on exports to generate revenues. ➡️ Knowledge and capacity loss. Without a sufficient customer base in Europe, European companies may have to give up the production of certain equipment or not develop it at all. This is critical in particular for systems based on new and emergent technologies (e.g. hypersonic, directed energy weapons) that require massive investments. This may lead to a permanent loss of know-how and production capacity in Europe. Read the paper in full and find out more: https://lnkd.in/er6mXvH5
