Investing in a Sustainable Future
About us
The mission of BIO is to support a strong private sector in developing and/or emerging countries, to enable them to gain access to growth and sustainable development with the aim of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. BIO invests directly in private sector projects and as such makes a structural contribution to the socio-economic growth of those host countries. Its mandate requires strict criteria in terms of geographical targets, financing tools and, above all, impact on development. In developing countries, the informal economy is proof of great dynamism; however access to long-term finance and capital, without which companies cannot grow, is limited or impossible for a large chunk of the population. In fact, the banking system is often unsuited to the needs of small entrepreneurs and does not allow the emergence of income-generating activities. Support for the private sector is therefore an essential link in the development cooperation chain, as it drives economic growth. By producing goods and services, local enterprises help improve the population’s living standards, accelerate technological developments and lower prices by stimulating competition and increasing the country’s tax base, which is essential for financing infrastructures, education and health. BIO's strategy focuses on the financial sector, enterprises and infrastructure projects, with three key objectives: optimising the development impact, supporting sustainable projects, and additionality.

📢 BIO at the 2nd Annual Workshop for Development Finance Communicators in Frankfurt! On March 21, BIO joined peers and experts in Frankfurt to discuss how development finance communicators can navigate today’s challenges: polarisation, budget constraints, and misinformation. 💡 Key themes explored: ✅ Building trust: Strengthening ties with investors and partner countries. ✅ Better storytelling: Crafting impact-driven narratives that counter stereotypes. ✅ Media & technology: Adapting to evolving media trends and leveraging data-driven insights. ✅ Strategic partnerships: Collaborating across sectors, regions, and global campaigns. One of the key discussions focused on why it remains so difficult to convince private investors to engage in impact-driven initiatives. The consensus? The language used must be tailored to their expectations and priorities to effectively bridge the gap between development finance and private capital. Our role as impact investors goes beyond financing, it’s about shaping narratives that inspire trust and action. BIO was happy to welcome Gricha Safarian, CEO of Puratos Grand Place Vietnam, a long-time partner and pioneer in sustainable chocolate production. Since 1994, Puratos Grand Place Vietnam (PGPV) has been shaping the chocolate industry, producing 3,000 tons of chocolate per year for prestigious hotels, bakeries, and confectioners in Vietnam, North America, and Asia. But their impact goes beyond numbers—it’s about sustainable sourcing, local economic growth, and innovation. 📍 A Fully Integrated Cocoa Value Chain in Vietnam Puratos Grand Place Vietnam made history in 2011 by launching the first chocolate made entirely in Vietnam—from cacao cultivation to the final product. By sourcing locally, they reduce imports, lower their ecological footprint, and ensure quality at every stage. As an investor, BIO - the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries is proud to contribute to sustainable cocoa production, economic resilience, and long-term impact in Vietnam’s agricultural sector. #BIOInvest #SustainableInvestment #ImpactFinance #Cocoa #Vietnam #Agriculture #Chocolate
