CCU POLICY I CO2 Value Europe Urges New Low Carbon Fuels Rules to Be Consistent and Fit-for-Purpose for Driving Defossilisation through CCU in Europe The European Commission’s consultation on the delegated regulation on low carbon fuels (https://lnkd.in/dTh5GJec) sets the scene for the adoption of a detailed methodology on how to define low carbon hydrogen and low carbon fuels (LCFs): it elaborates on how to calculate the 70% reduction in GHG emissions for LCFs compared to fossil equivalents. In our response to the consultation: 🔵 We call authorities to use this opportunity to offer clear and consistent rules, including by using concrete examples, to avoid the need for future guidance and give economic operators the clarity required to invest promptly in hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) technologies, helping accelerate Europe’s transition away from fossil fuels. 🔵 We also believe that further delays and legal uncertainties should be avoided by including specific timelines for reality checks and impact assessments to evaluate whether CCU fuel deployment rules are meeting the deadlines established in EU legislations (e.g. #REDIII, ReFuelEU Aviation, and FuelEU Maritime). 🔵 We invite the European Commission to clarify its plans to extend the #GHG comparator for RFNBOs in transport to include industrial sectors, as this directly affects the methodology for LCFs, which relies on the RFNBOs' GHG comparator. 🔵 We advocate for EU authorities to use consistent terminology throughout its different pieces of legislation and avoid reintroducing obstacles to the deployment of CCU fuels. CCU EVENTS | Learning Opportunity: TAKE-OFF Final Conference Join us for the TAKE-OFF project Final Conference on the 11th of December 2024 at the KBR (Royal Library of Belgium) in Brussels, where we will explore the final results and future prospects of the TAKE-OFF project and synthetic Sustainable Aviation Fuels (#eSAF) production. To reduce GHG emissions in the aviation sector, the European Commission has set, through the #RefuelEU Aviation Regulation, binding targets for the supply of synthetic SAF in aviation. It is therefore crucial that the technologies for the production of such fuels are scaled up at an accelerated pace to provide the necessary volumes. The TAKE-OFF project has pioneered an innovative process to convert CO₂ and renewable hydrogen into eSAF using olefins as intermediates. This unique technology offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient solution compared to other power-to-liquid alternatives. By capturing CO₂ from industrial sources or through Direct Air Capture and combining it with renewable hydrogen, the project demonstrates the successful conversion of CO₂ into light olefins, which are then upgraded into eSAF. The conference will present the most innovative outcomes of the TAKE-OFF project from a technical viewpoint while highlighting the crucial role of standardisation and certification of eSAF for the future of aviation and the importance of a supportive policy framework for the deployment of eSAF in the aviation fuel mix. Furthermore, the TAKE-OFF final conference will highlight the advancements of key EU-funded projects focused on developing and commercialising eSAF and foster dialogue between policymakers, fuel producers, and airlines to ensure a smooth and efficient rollout of eSAF across Europe. This event will be of great interest to aviation professionals, policymakers, and sustainability advocates eager to learn how eSAF is key to a sustainable, safe, and economically viable future for aviation. Have a look at the draft agenda (https://t.ly/HFWvN) and register (https://t.ly/crr12) by the 4th of December at the latest. For more information please email Antonio La Mantia at antonio.lamantia@co2value.eu. Find out more about the conference and TAKE-OFF at https://t.ly/4wekb. CO₂ Value Europe is proudly part of the TAKE-OFF consortium as WP6 leader in communication and dissemination. The project plans to develop a next-generation Power-to-SAF process which converts renewable hydrogen and captured CO₂ to a class of hydrocarbons called light olefins, such as ethylene and propylene, which then need to be subsequently converted into the final jet fuel through further reactions.

Dear CO₂ Value Europe members and followers, The October edition of our newsletter is here, only a few days after our annual CO₂ Value Days and General Assembly in Grenoble, France, where more than 150 experts from the CCU community gathered to exchange about the latest developments in the CCU field and initiate new collaborations. It was wonderful to see the growth of the CO₂ Value Europe community within just one year, a signal of the importance stakeholders along the value chain have to CCU. I reaffirmed this a few days later during the Industrial Carbon Management Forum plenary in Pau, France, where I had the opportunity to present the progress of the Working Group on CCU, which we are co-chairing as mandated by the European Commission, to hundreds of stakeholders in-person and many more online. With the new Commission nearly in place, we expect continued dedication to achieving the goals of the Green Deal, with a stronger emphasis on maintaining industrial competitiveness. We will continue to showcase CCU's contribution to both the Green Deal and industrial competitiveness, including in emerging policy areas such as incentivising captured carbon as an alternative feedstock for chemicals. In this edition, you are invited to look at the latest topics of the 2024 Horizon Europe Work Programmes (closing in February 2025) and prepare for the new wave of calls in the Innovation Fund, expected in early December. Please also consider the list of interesting events for the next months where our members can benefit from preferential rates. As always, a warm welcome to our new members who are helping us raise the voice of the CCU community. Enjoy reading at urly.it/311q2k and reach out if you wish to join our activities.
