Relations between Ethiopia and its neighbour Eritrea have deteriorated in recent months, raising fears of a new war between the countries. The last thing the Horn of Africa needs is more conflict. Fortunately, there is still time and space for concerted diplomacy. Those positioned to play a mediating role should move with urgency to do so. Our new Conflict Alert looks at what can be done to reduce tensions and defuse the threat of more destructive violence in the region. https://lnkd.in/eQwFYtFW

The ramifications of Donald Trump’s expulsions are still unwinding and may be a harbinger of further measures. But who is being deported and why does it matter? We explain. On 15 March, the White House announced that President Donald Trump was invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 in response to what the administration terms “irregular warfare” waged by a criminal network known as Tren de Aragua, which it alleges follows the orders of President Nicolás Maduro’s government in Venezuela. The State Department has also designated Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organisation on 19 February. Three flights carrying 238 Venezuelan deportees (as well as 23 Salvadorans) landed at San Salvador airport on the night of Trump’s announcement. Of the Venezuelans, 137 were deported under the terms of the Alien Enemies Act, according to the White House. El Salvador is to be paid to incarcerate them for at least a year in a notorious maximum-security jail. In our latest Q&A, we unpack the origins of Tren de Aragua and the political fallout from these deportations. https://lnkd.in/eiAxbgkX

🗞️ This Week in Conflict | Stopping Israel’s War in Gaza A ceasefire that brought welcome respite to war-torn Gaza has been broken. On 18 March, Israel resumed bombing Gaza, upending a two-month ceasefire. Our experts explain why it is vital that the U.S. should insist on restoring the truce and endorse the Arab League plan for Gaza as the basis for a more permanent peace. Over half a century on from the declaration of a “war on drugs”, the map of the drug trade in Latin America has been transformed and is fueling violence across the region. We bring that sprawling criminal ecosystem and evolving drug trade to life in our latest visual explainer. Elsewhere, our latest briefing unpacks the conflict in Myanmar’s Chin State, the humanitarian crisis, and the efforts to heal the deep rifts between anti-regime armed groups that ejected the military from the state.
