We are shaping smarter grids for your future!
About us
European Distribution System Operators (E.DSO) is the key-interface between Europe’s DSOs and the European institutions, and promotes the development and large-scale testing of smart grid technologies in real-life situations, new market designs and regulation. E.DSO gathers 36 leading electricity distribution system operators (DSOs) in 19 countries, including 3 national associations, cooperating to ensure the reliability of Europe’s electricity supply for consumers and enabling their active participation in our energy system. How? By shaping smarter grids for your future. E.DSO and its members are committed to taking on the huge challenges associated with realising the Energy Union, built on the EU’s ambitious energy, climate, security of supply, jobs and growth objectives. This involves ensuring the reliability and security of Europe’s electricity supply to consumers while enabling them to take a more active part in our energy system. E.DSO focuses on guiding EU research, demonstration and innovation (RD & I), policy and Member State regulation to support smart grids development for a sustainable energy system.

Today, E.DSO Secretary General Charles Esser and several E.DSO members attended the Hungarian Presidency’s Electricity Grid Development Conference in Budapest. The focus was on: ✅ Challenges of electricity grids, the role of regulation and market design and ✅ Success factors for the implementation of network developments. One of the most important conclusions of the day was to focus on implementing tangible solutions that all actors can agree on, in a spirit of trust, rather than siloed pushes from many actors. And likewise, we can agree that some risk needs to be accepted in making needed investments, while costs, of course, remain relevant. Luis Vale Cunha of E.DSO member E-REDES Portugal and Remy Garaude Verdier of E.DSO member Enedis participated in the panel on “Technical Challenges”: ✨ Luis Vale Cunha noted the increasing amount of solar PV on the distribution grid in Portugal, in the context of Wind and Hydro power and backup other fuel sources. There is a need for a clear framework to mix generation elements for the optimal solution each time. ✨ Remy Garaude Verdier mentioned the 600 collective self-consumption schemes, set up by Enedis in France. This is a very efficient way to balance local generation and consumption. Primary substations are being built that are dedicated to renewables. The conference ended with an important focus on financing challenges. 💰 #EDSO #DSOs #HU24EU #Grids
