Day 2 of our October #EESCplenary focused on the #Enlargement High-Level Forum. Our President Stefano Mallia moderated the discussion on "The role of social partners in fostering a #competitive, #green and #digital transition". The panel focused on how to maintain EU's #competitiveness 📈 and how workers and employers can work together to achieve 🇪🇺's objectives of the Green and Digital transitions 🤝 🗣️ "Engaging social partners is crucial to achieve the two transitions. We need to invest more in green #technology and digital #innovation. We must also strengthen the connections between green #economy, digital #technology and #competitiveness. Only by integrating these areas can we achieve the socio-economic goals needed to succeed".

Management Board member at Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Member of European Economic and Social Committee Employers group
This morning, a clear task was given from a representative of Polish employers - to ensure the Letta and Dragi reports are not left to collect dust on the shelves.👌 These last couple of days I am spending in beautiful Gdansk in Poland 🇵🇱 to attend EFNI ( European Forum for New Ideas) together with my colleagues from EESC Employers' Group I attended several panel discussions and learned a lot. The major topics of conversation were European competitiveness and the upcoming Polish presidency of the EU. Here are the main discussion points of Polish Precidency, but please note that these may not be 100% precise and could change: - Safety for Europe - Energy security - EU's global competitiveness - EU budget for the future - Combating disinformation - Health care safety - Civil security/society resilience I also heard that the Polish government is open and willing to work with partners from civil society to ensure their involvement in all important legislative files. Its a opportunity to build on! Also, I have several ideas for upcoming events organized by the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Latvijas Tirdzniecības un rūpniecības kamera). I believe it's time to host an International Economic and Political Discussion Forum in Riga to discuss Latvia's 🇱🇻interests in the EU and the world 🌍🌏🌎

Inspiring days at #EFNI2024 where we had a strong delegation participating in panels on #SingleMarket, Strategic autonomy, and rebuilding Ukraine, among others. 🗣️ Gintaras Morkis: "Beyond #defence aid, it's necessary to help #RebuildingUkraine, even if bombs keep falling. Hospitals, schools, infrastructure are needed. Public procurement contracts should go to 🇪🇺 manufacturers, not 🇨🇳 supporting 🇷🇺 military industry in #UkraineWar" 💬 Pietro Francesco De Lotto: "The EU made three major mistakes in the 1990s: delegating our #security to the US, energy to Russia and #manufacturing to China. The new geopolitical landscape requires a fundamental shift, developing a common approach to EU defence by boosting domestic production capabilities (e.g. drones). Ensuring access to cheap, #sustainable and secure #energy supplies and raw materials will increase EU strategic autonomy ♻️ The EU also needs stronger financing and a revised competition policy to help European companies grow and compete globally 🌐" Grateful to our partner Konfederacja Lewiatan for the constructive exchange and collaboration. We look forward to #EFNI2025

📢 Today the EESC Employers' Group organised a panel discussion on the future of the #SingleMarket at the European Forum for New Ideas, #EFNI2024. 🗣️ As our President Stefano Mallia stressed: “Investment alone will not drive Europe forward. As both #Letta and #Draghi emphasised, reforms must deliver tangible progress. This means completing the Single Market, removing unnecessary barriers, and adopting a pragmatic approach to reducing regulatory burdens.” This is why we propose: 📍 A revamped competitiveness check and an Interinstitutional Agreement on simplification and better law-making. 📍 Turbocharging investment with a European Savings and Investments Union. 📍 Increasing research spending to focus on strategic priorities, groundbreaking research, and scientific excellence. 📍 Establishing a new EU-wide legal status to support innovative companies in their growth. The future of the Single Market is a shared responsibility requiring collaboration between policymakers, business leaders, and civil society. It will only deliver if Europe moves forward with the necessary reforms in energy, labour markets, education and other areas which are largely the responsibility of the Member States. 🏦 The German position on the proposed UniCredit/Commerzbank merger raises concerns as it undermines the very principles of the EU’s single market. This is why we need deeper #EUintegration. We need a #banking union and we need a #capital markets union.

Everyone is familiar with these keywords (key challenges we face): ➡️ #Innovation & #Technology & #Skills (gaps) ➡️ #Energy (supply and price competitiveness) ➡️ #Regulatory framework (burden) ➡️ #Water (scarcity) ➡️ #Singlemarket (think European, not national) ➡️ (Lack of) #ambition ➡️ (Un)#competitiveness Yes, I’m referring to the state of the European 🇪🇺 economy and society, as outlined in the Draghi report—a reality we all recognize. We have long known our weaknesses, and at last, we are openly discussing them. But now, more than ever, we must move beyond words and take decisive, effective action. My gratitude to the EESC Employers' Group of the European Economic and Social Committee for a productive dialogue with the Hungarian 🇭🇺 EU Presidency in Budapest! Debating our collective challenges in the EU: #innovation, #energy, #workforce, #bureaucracy, implementing #greendeal.... and the opportunity to remind ourselves that we must not forget the basics: our #internalmarket and its great freedoms. In Hungary too, the nationalist temptation is strong: taxation of foreign distributors, cap pricing.... On this topic, just have a look on recent ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Case C-557/23 | SPAR Magyarország concluding that the Hungarian Price Caps and the food stocking obligation were infringing the CMO regulation.
