📃 Our latest #ThinkPaper asks: can #aviation tackle the massive challenge of decarbonising 🌱 long-haul flights ✈️? We use our new #FlyingGreen 🌍 platform's FuellingDecarb module to: 🚩 explore the feasibility of producing sufficient sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) to meet the ReFuelEU blending mandate for long-haul flights 🚩 estimate the volume of electricity necessary to generate the required #SAF. Our #ThinkPaper finds that: 🌱 producing the required SAF & co-products would require an important upscaling of green/clean energy 🌱 initially centralising SAF supplies at key #airports with predominantly long-haul traffic could enhance efficiency, reduce infrastructure investments, and maximise environmental benefits, as well as ease the transition to deploying SAF at all European airports 🌱 replacing older aircraft (10+Y) could reduce the carbon emissions of the long-haul fleet by approximately 10%, also diminishing their SAF requirements 🌱 significant synergies with other transport sectors could expedite SAF production: as road transport moves towards electrification, a substantial portion of the EU's biofuel capacity could shift to aviation, also supporting maritime needs. 💬 For EUROCONTROL Director General Raúl Medina Caballero: "The paper shows there is considerable scope for advancing net zero goals: SAF, expanding green energy production & replacing older aircraft with newer fuel-efficient models represent a powerful combination for medium to long-term emissions reductions." #OperA (Operate Anywhere) - looking to orchestrate 🎼 piloted air taxi & unmanned cargo ops! OperA's key goal ⚽️ is to enable safe and efficient operations in all types of airspace (controlled, uncontrolled & #Uspace) and conditions by validating complex piloted air taxi and unmanned cargo operations in real-life ATM conditions including contingency & non-nominal situations. Our latest OperA project meeting at #EIH the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub 💡 saw consortium partners 🚩 discuss project status, comms & dissemination activities, standardisation & regulations, the execution of the Release 5 plan, and upcoming activities 🚩 review an important milestone reached: 📦 OperA Solution B - Unmanned eVTOL cargo operations - performed its first validation exercise which included the validation of processes, actors' activities, and operational & info-sharing procedures to enable UAS cross-border cargo operations. For Solution B, the team successfully executed the first exercise use case, a large cargo #eVTOL flight between Lithuania 🇱🇹 and Latvia 🇱🇻, departing from U-space and continuing the flight in controlled and uncontrolled (Class G) airspace. OperA is a SESAR Joint Undertaking project led by Honeywell that at the #EIH, we're supporting by ✈ assessing the consistency of OperA use cases with the U-space ConOps ✈ coordinating activities related to standards and regulations, from identifying their applicability to providing recommendations and considerations for the ecosystem built upon OperA trials. ✈ managing inter-project coordination by leveraging our involvement in multiple SESAR projects. ✒️Another step closer to our new home of #AviationInnovation, as EUROCONTROL Director European Green Sky Tânia Cardoso Simões signs on behalf of our Director General Raúl Medina the bilateral promise of sale to buy the 4,428m² parcel of land that will host the new EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub (#EIH) at Paris-Saclay Innovation Playground. The signature by Tânia & Annie Bonk, Legal Director of EPA Paris Saclay, is the starting point of our strong partnership with Paris Saclay for the design and execution phases of the new exciting new building, for which #RPBW Renzo Piano Building Workshop has been selected as the architect. Key dates: 🔑 end-2025: the design phase scheduled to be completed 🔑 spring 2026: construction work due to start 🔑 summer 2028: our new #EIH premises expected to be operational!

Yesterday evening the EUROCONTROL Network Manager took a major step forward in its digital transformation programme with the entry into operations of the first release (Wave O) of #iNM, our integrated Network Management programme. 👉 #iNM will enable ever more integrated business services and products for all our aviation stakeholders, and 🌊 Wave O delivers: 🚀 a brand-new digital platform, the foundation of our modernised operational systems ✈ 3️⃣ replatformed Digital Products: #CAL (Code Allocation List), #RAD (Route Availability Document) & #DNP (Dynamic Network Plan). This release marks the first 🌊 of iNM deliverables following the opening of our new NM Operational Centre (#NMOC) at the end of October 2023. #iNM is an ambitious digital transformation programme designed to replace our legacy operational systems with advanced digital products, modernising European air traffic management (ATM) and dealing with the capacity challenge by enhancing the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of the European aviation network. 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eWs4KDPF

In Tirana 🇦🇱 with the Albanian CAA to discuss airspace risk assessments (#ARA) in a recent workshop on #Uspace implementation. The workshop organised by the EUROCONTROL Support to States team & hosted by the Albanian Civil Aviation Authority involved a broad range of participants from the CAA, Albcontrol the Albanian #ANSP, as well as police and the military. EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub (#EIH) drone team representatives Farah Luu, Norberto Vera Vélez & Santiago del Hierro, together with Olivier MROWICKI from the EUROCONTROL Network Manager delivered the workshop, which focused on: 📌 explaining the ARA method developed by the EIH 📌 presenting the different steps towards implementing U-space 📌 sharing lessons learned. Yesterday, we celebrated the launch of the new LSSIP+ 2024 monitoring cycle! 👏🏼 As Iacopo Prissinotti, Director Network Management at EUROCONTROL, emphasised in his opening speech, the LSSIP+ process remains a versatile and flexible tool, enabling strategic alignment with the ICAO GANP and the ATM Master Plan—driving meaningful and timely evolutions in the sector. In her keynote address, Mariagrazia La Piscopia, Executive Director at SESAR Deployment Manager, acknowledged the success of the EUROCONTROL and SDM collaboration, as well as the critical role of the LSSIP+ process and tool. 💬 We cannot progress towards our goals without a clear understanding of where we stand today. So, what makes the LSSIP+ process so valuable? Its true strength lies in the strong engagement of all Member and Comprehensive Agreement States, the ATM stakeholders' organisations, and its adaptability to meet their evolving needs. We are proud of our strong cooperation with the SESAR Deployment Manager, and our newly established connection with the CNS Programme Manager. Our new deliverable, the EUROCONTROL Implementation Plan and Report, positions implementation planning under NM Working arrangements, closer to the operational ATM stakeholders, ensuring a more robust implementation planning input to be approved by the EUROCONTROL Member States. ➡️ Looking Ahead to 2025: Several CP1 deadlines are expected to be met. With the upcoming iEAD development—a key milestone for iNM—we will directly advance the progress of multiple CP1 objectives monitored through LSSIP+. 📌 A Decade of Achievement: Today we also celebrated 10 years of close partnership with ICAO Paris. This year, we deliver the 10th Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBU) Implementation Monitoring Report, a crucial tool for monitoring and analysing the implementation of ICAO's Global Air Navigation Plan within the EUR Region. This report stands as a testament to the successful partnership between EUROCONTROL and ICAO over the past decade. Discussing how to increase aviation's resilience to climate change ⚡⛈️ impacts this week in the 7th European Aviation Climate 🌍 Change Adaptation Working Group. The Working Group we co-chair with ACI EUROPE 🤝 talked about concrete actions being taken by European #aviation sector stakeholders to identify risks & adapt to the impacts of #ClimateChange. Good progress was made on ✈ developing regionally-focused guidance to support stakeholders ✈ a new awareness-raising factsheet 📄 with information on climate change effects & impacts for the European aviation sector, climate risk assessment and adaptation planning (to be launched 🚀 on 28.11 at the ACI EUROPE Airports Innovate event). The Working Group currently has 39 member organisations, with representatives meeting 3-4 times per year to share expertise & best practices on how to avoid/reduce the operational, infrastructure & economic risks of climate change for the European aviation sector.

✈️ Getting ready for the 1st validation exercise of MITRANO, a project designed to manage better mission trajectories and collaborative decision-making at network level and in ATC operations, including advanced design principles for military access to airspace. 👉 MITRANO is a SESAR Joint Undertaking project led by EUROCONTROL, and last week's meeting for Solution 1, which took place at #EIH the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub 💡 on 8 and 9 October, aimed to prepare the first validation exercise (planned for November 2024) regarding the integration of shared military ATM data within the collaborative traffic flow & capacity management processes. Our partner organisations 🤝 for this validation include AIRBUS, PANSA, ROMATSA, INTEGRA, NATS, and military airspace users from France, Germany & Spain. Europe's armed forces operate more than 150K flights per year. Accommodating them may mean closing airspace, sometimes at short notice, to civil traffic. Given growing air traffic demand & complexity, new operational & technical solutions that allow more flexible civil-military cooperation like SESAR3 project MITRANO are thus vital to maximise the use of airspace.
