🚀 Versnellen van duurzame biotechnologie in de agrifoodsector met Biotech4Food 🌍🍽️ Met het Biotech4Food-project, gefinancierd door de Europese Unie, willen we de implementatie van duurzame en innovatieve biotechnologische oplossingen in de agrifoodsector versnellen. In acht verschillende Europese regio's hebben we een ecosysteemanalyse en een mapping van drie waardeketens uitgevoerd om inzicht te krijgen in de kansen, uitdagingen en structuren die nodig zijn om biotechnologie in voedselsystemen te integreren en de samenwerking tussen belanghebbenden te verbeteren. Uitdagingen, noden en opportuniteiten in de agrifoodsector Biotechnologische toepassingen zoals microbiële en precisiefermentatie- en enzymtechnologieën bieden veelbelovende oplossingen voor eiwitdiversificatie, duurzame voedselproductie en functionele voedingsmiddelen. Deze innovaties kunnen de afhankelijkheid van traditionele landbouwhulpbronnen verminderen en tegelijkertijd de voedselkwaliteit en voeding verbeteren. De sector groeit en biedt aanzienlijke economische en duurzaamheidsvoordelen. Echter, de complexiteit van de Europese regelgeving rond voedselbiotechnologie, vooral bij novel foods en GGO's, vormt een obstakel voor commercialisering. Goedkeuringsprocessen zijn vaak langdurig en duur, wat de marktintroductie van innovatieve oplossingen bemoeilijkt. Daarnaast zijn er inconsistenties tussen nationale en Europese regelgeving, wat extra complexiteit en onzekerheid creëert voor biotechbedrijven die in meerdere landen actief zijn. De acceptatie door consumenten blijft ook een uitdaging. Het is cruciaal om het publieke bewustzijn en vertrouwen in biotechnologie afgeleide voedingsproducten te vergroten. Het aanpakken van desinformatie en het promoten van de voordelen van biotechnologie kan de publieke perceptie helpen veranderen. In het B-trust project wordt verder rond dit thema gewerkt. Ondanks de beschikbaarheid van pilootfaciliteiten in heel Europa, is de behoefte aan financiering van de opschalingsfase erg groot en risicovol. Dit creëert een 'valley of death' tussen de R&D- en industriële commercialiseringsfase. Veel biotech-startups worstelen met de hoge kosten van het opschalen van de productie, wat de toegang tot de markt belemmert. Sterkere grensoverschrijdende samenwerking is nodig om kennisuitwisseling en markttoegang voor biotech-innovaties te verbeteren. Door transregionale samenwerking te bevorderen, kan Europa een robuuster en onderling verbonden biotech-ecosysteem creëren.
