🌍 As the world seeks cleaner energy solutions, #sustainablefuels are set to play a critical role in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, maritime, and heavy-duty road transport. While we are seeing a decline in gasoline consumption across Europe, the demand for conventional biofuels may also diminish, according to the projection from the Global Energy Perspective Report 2024. Of all the transport sectors, road transport has the most promising outlook for sustainable fuels, with projections significantly shaped by proposed regulations up to  2030. In comparison, the aviation and maritime sectors are expected to adopt sustainable fuels more gradually due to their less developed markets, according to the report. However, long-term success depends on future regulations and technological innovations. Without a solid business case, it is hard to justify multi-billion-euro investments from fuel manufacturers for smaller quantities of fuel. ✈ 🛳 Sectors like aviation and maritime, while growing, do not present enough demand to support heavy investment and infrastructure for renewable fuels on their own. This imbalance highlights the critical role road transport will play in decarbonisation strategies. The Fuels Manufacturing Industry has worked on its offer for Europe; one that takes into account the climate neutrality EU 2050 goals; an offer that envisions a secure supply of energy and a resilient EU; and that ensures a globally competitive industry and the protection of everybody’s welfare. For the planet, for the EU economy and for the citizens. ➡ And you can read about it in our “More than a Manifesto – An Offer for Europe”: https://lnkd.in/gfZEFnPC

#LowCarbonNews: 🏝️ The Canary Islands, in Spain, is one of the nine outermost regions of the European Union and as regions with many specificities, they rely heavily on #airtransport to import goods and transport people in and out of the mainland. This exercise of transportation can now be done in a more sustainable way: CEPSA is now supplying sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) to these islands. The energy company has made SAF permanently available at the North Tenerife and Gran Canaria airports, and in the coming weeks, it will be expanding this availability to the archipelago’s other main airports. ✈️ This type of biofuel achieves a reduction of aircraft emissions by up to 90% throughout its entire life cycle, compared to conventional kerosene. Cepsa is one of the primary producers and suppliers of aviation fuels in the Spanish market. At its La Rábida Energy Park near the city of Huelva, it produces this sustainable fuel from used cooking oils, as a way of promoting the circular economy. 🔄 Read more about this development here: https://lnkd.in/d-awqpqX

🎂 Our colleagues in Bulgaria are celebrating a special date: the 25 years of the Bulgarian Petroleum and Gas Association (#BPGA). To add to the celebrations, BPGA organised a conference yesterday that shed light on “The Energy Transition in the Transport in Southeast Europe”. Liana Gouta, FuelsEurope Director General, was invited to join the first panel focused on the Energy Transition – Perspectives and Scenarios 🍃⛽️. As part of our Director General’s intervention, she presented to the participants the FuelsEurope’s “More than a Manifesto – An Offer for Europe”, in which the Fuels Manufacturing industry details how we can contribute to the crucial and ambitious objectives of the EU 🇪🇺. “The role of the fuels manufacturing industry is strategic and its transition will be integral to achieving climate. The EU’s climate neutrality ambition cannot be achieved without renewable liquid fuels”, Liana mentioned.   Liana Gouta took the opportunity to discuss the ongoing political transition within the European institutions, emphasising the importance of prioritising a competitive economy for both businesses and citizens: “The challenges that started to appear at the end of the previous legislative cycle should be addressed in priority by the new European Commission and European Parliament in order to ensure that the EU’s transition maintains a competitive economy for businesses and citizens”, she remarked. “A robust EU economy built on a competitive EU industry is a prerequisite for the EU’s competitiveness and successful achievement of its climate ambitions.”   Congratulations on the 25th anniversary to the Bulgarian Petroleum and Gas Association (BPGA) 👏.   If you haven’t had the opportunity to read the “More than a Manifesto”, we invite you to do it here: https://lnkd.in/gfZEFnPC

#LowCarbonNews: TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM have signed a landmark agreement to supply up to 1.5 million tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF) over the next decade, accelerating the decarbonisation of #airtransport in Europe. This agreement marks one of Air France-KLM's largest SAF purchases to date. ✈️⛽️ In 2022 and 2023, Air France-KLM led the world in SAF usage, representing 17% and 16% of global production respectively. By 2030, the Group aims to reduce CO₂ emissions per passenger/km by 30%. TotalEnergies will produce SAF from waste and residues at its biorefineries in France and across Europe, using second-generation SAF that does not compete with food production and is certified for sustainability. This SAF will power flights departing from France, the Netherlands, and other European countries, delivering a CO₂ emissions reduction of up to 90% compared to fossil fuel equivalents. As Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, said, "SAF is a 'win-win' for both the future of industry and aviation." ➡️ Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/exxu9jXP

☀️Before the summer, we published the FuelsEurope Statistical Report 2024 available. Did you know that it has been 10 years since we launched the first edition of the Statistical Report? 📄All the previous editions are available on the FuelsEurope website for consultation. But while we are at it, let’s dive into this year’s publication.   🚢✈️🚗 Transport, including international shipping & aviation, generated 28% of the EU #GHG emissions in 2021. How can we curb these emissions quickly and help the EU reach its 2050 climate goals? ➡️With #RenewableFuels. They are made of biogenic or synthetic origin, unlike conventional fuels made from petroleum. Produced from waste, sustainable biomass, renewables and biogenic or captured CO2, renewable fuels emit no or very limited additional CO2 during their production and use. For more interesting data, have a look at our Statistical Report 2024: https://lnkd.in/ez8Df9ua

Hola Chile! Are you ready for the #WRC rally in the Biobío region? 🏎 🗺 Chile is a relatively recent location; it was added to the WRC calendar in 2019. Thrill and difficulty are guaranteed with the route including technical, twisty and cambered forest tracks. Adding to the complexity is the weather, with a high chance of downpours during the Southern hemisphere's springtime ☂. Even in this challenging environment, #RenewableFuels are there to power the rally cars! By using renewable fuels, they do not add CO2 into the atmosphere. 🌿 Carbon is not bad per se and is actually an essential element for all forms of life on Earth. For the combustion to happen, they use carbon already present in the atmosphere. Good news! These renewable fuels are not only for rally cars: they can also work in your internal combustion engine and allow you to drive #sustainably. If you want to learn more about renewable fuels and their closed carbon cycle, visit our website: www.cleanfuelsforall.eu

FuelsEurope supports the EU ETS as a cost-effective market mechanism for emissions reduction in the power and industry sector, and it has always supported a global ETS to include as much as possible societal emissions. However, the impact on prices of the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (#ETS2) may be larger than initially anticipated. 📰 In a recent interview with Frédéric Simon from Carbon Pulse, Liana Gouta, FuelsEurope’s Director General, pointed out that the European Commission’s projection of a €0.10 increase per litre of fuel under ETS2 is optimistic. She highlighted that real-world increases could be higher, impacting consumers significantly. As Liana Gouta noted: "Our first impression is that the €0.10 increase in the Commission’s impact assessment is optimistic." The ETS2, which will apply to road transport and heating fuels starting in 2027, aims to incentivise #decarbonisation. However, the potential social impact is a pressing concern. “The social dimension is going to be extremely sensitive”, Gouta warned: "In 2018, we had the Yellow Vests in France. But this was a French issue; today we are talking about Europe where the social disparities are wider." “We need to realise that broader adjustments could be necessary in citizens’ everyday lives and the way they choose their mobility,” Gouta said. “If the carbon price is too high, some consumers will either be less mobile or have to find other means of mobility than using their cars”, she told Carbon Pulse. "A big question mark for us is how quick and how deep the building sector can decarbonise. And therefore, what this will imply for transport. This is why we need this modelling exercise," Gouta emphasised, referring to a modelling system currently being developed by Concawe, whose aim is to identify additional measures that should be taken in order to achieve the ambition set out in the ETS2 legislation. What are your thoughts on the implementation of ETS2 and its social impact? 🤔 Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/esVzYyga
