ICMP is the music publishing industry's global trade body. ICMP’s membership spans Majors, Indies (mainly SMEs & start-ups) and 76 national trade associations across 6 continents. ICMP represents more than 90% of the world’s published music - more than 170 million music tracks, of more than 5,000 recognised genres, from baroque to Brit Pop to K-Pop. Our industry is the nexus point between music creation & music markets. Our members are the multi-billion annual investors in the world's songwriters and composers, then bring the world’s music to a global audience via all formats, including digital audio and AV music streaming; broadcast TV, radio and film; gaming; physical formats such as vinyl; print and hard copy songbooks; and public performances. Some ICMP companies were established in the 1700s and are still thriving today. Others are at the forefront of innovative, modern technologies such as A.I., livestreaming, virtual reality and voice activated audio hardware. As the global voice of music publishers and on behalf of our companies' songwriters and composers, ICMP's mission is to secure the best possible environment for the world's music to thrive, including by advocating to international decision makers and governments. Another big week for AI discussions – From Brazil, to China, to UK and Europe. Monday saw a private, cross-industry information event by the European music, newspaper, imagery, book and scientific/technical publishing sectors for government representatives detailing how GenAI and our industries work, licensing opportunities, extensive evidence of ongoing copyright infringement and vital messages for EU decision makers on how to get the EU AI Act implementation tools right. The core concern across all of the above sectors is that those tools for the EU AI Act currently fall far short of the training data transparency and copyright compliance we all need. The music publishing industry was represented by Tony Abner, General Counsel at ICMP member company BMG - The New Music Company and John Phelan our Director General at ICMP. 🎶 ⚖️ 🇪🇺

If protests are about ensuring respect for #rights, then fair comment. ICMP stands square in support of our UK industry association Music Publishers Association (UK) & countless #UK #songwriters & #composers in calling for no erosion of their legal rights & revenue streams for their music. On behalf of our international industry, our team at ICMP made a detailed submission to the UK government supporting The MPA, setting out evidence & realities in the world of #DigitalMusic, #copyright laws & #AI and supporting the policy option of strengthening copyright & licensing. On the flipside, pursuing a new exception to copyright laws for AI companies would be the equivalent of holing the boat you're aboard in the name of more ventilation. It was an unjustified idea in March 2023 when shelved previously, it remains an unjustified idea today. Commercially it would be devastating to a multi-billion pound, world-class industry, handing vast amounts of high-value IP away for free, no reason & no upswing. Opt out is a cop out. The world's music, Big Tech & AI industries have business fundamentals in common: we are all IP-intense sectors. Let's all maintain property rights, not erode them.
