Citizens across Europe are alarmed by the dangers to their health, the destruction of wildlife and nature, the decline of pollinators like #bees, the contamination of food, soil and water due to harmful chemicals. The broad demand for #pesticide reduction is shown in EU panels, barometers, opinion polls and official citizens' initiatives. Click on our factsheet to know more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eBzh2UjB

Working towards a pesticide free era
About us
PAN Europe is a network of NGOs working to minimise negative effects of pesticides and replace the use of hazardous chemicals with ecologically sound alternatives. We work to eliminate dependency on chemical pesticides and to support safe sustainable pest control methods. Our network brings together 34 consumer, public health, and environmental organisations, and women's groups from across Europe. PAN Europe is one of the regional centres of PAN International, founded in 1982, a network of over 600 nongovernmental organizations, institutions and individuals in over 90 countries working to replace the use of hazardous pesticides with ecologically sound and socially just alternatives.

European food production relies too much on the use of dangerous chemicals, such as #pesticides. This comes along with a serious backdrop: we are destroying Europe’s habitats and species. This loss of biodiversity threatens essential benefits, such as pollination, pest control, and soil health, that are crucial to agriculture and food production. The EU is reviewing a guidance document to protect insects and other arthropods against the negative effects of #pesticides. The current document is outdated and was co-written by the pesticide industry. It has never led to a ban on pesticides that contribute to Europe's staggering loss of its insect biomass and its farmland bird populations. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) working group preparing the new guideline is unbalanced and is discussing unscientific ecosystem service and disservice concepts. This will not correct the biodiversity collapse we are facing. In a new Manifesto, PAN Europe urges the EU to protect arthropods – butterflies, beetles and other invertebrates essential for life on Earth. #SaveOurInsects https://lnkd.in/evp4TgTD

"It's quite scary imagining where we're heading if we don't change direction pretty radically. we're in the midst of an accelerating extinction crisis globally." In this interview, bumblebee specialist Professor Dave Goulson talks about the effect of pesticides on arthropods, 'the bulk of life on Earth'. Insect and other arthropod populations are declining rapidly. This alarming loss of biodiversity jeopardises our joy of life. After all, what would the world be like if children grew up without the joy of fluttering butterflies or buzzing bumblebees? But there is more at stake. Our food production depends on healthy and biodiverse ecosystems for pollination and fertile soil. The current EU #pesticide regulation completely fails to protect non-target organisms, as was shown in our recent report ‘Licence to Kill’. In our campaign to protect arthropods from pesticides to restore biodiversity, we interview scientists, review new scientific research and highlight the importance of lesser-known arthropods. Our aim is to stimulate the discussion to achieve the urgent protection of the natural abundance on which our lives depend. https://lnkd.in/eY3WEmPn

We are exposed to a cocktail of #pesticide residues daily. They are present in dust, water and food. We find them far beyond agricultural areas. They are designed to kill insects, fungi and undesirable plants, but they also interact with our cells and organs. They are a major cause of the collapse of biodiversity and are also harmful to human health. Click on our factsheet to know more: https://lnkd.in/eRkyJnz9

🐞 Meet the ladybird, a tiny guardian of nature 🌿 These iconic spotted beetles aren’t just cute, they’re fierce pest fighters and secret pollinators. One ladybird can eat 50 aphids a day, protecting plants and crops without using #pesticides. Yet, harmful pesticide use is wiping them out, threatening natural pest control and food security. We need stronger EU pesticide guidelines to protect these insects we can’t live without. #SaveOurInsects https://lnkd.in/exfQYkBB

Spring is here, full of new life. But it is also the start of the spraying season. With a #PesticideActionWeek, we and our members and partners in different EU countries ask attention to the devastating effects of #pesticides on our health, soil, water, and biodiversity. https://lnkd.in/eyuzTwt8

Romanian court puts an end to an era of illegal derogations for #neonicotinoids. The Cluj (Romania) Court of Appeal suspended new derogations granted by the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture for the use of neonicotinoid-treated seeds in maize and sunflower. Eco Ruralis and Romapis, a member of PAN Europe, initiated a court case in December, asking the Court to take urgent action to protect pollinators against these illegal derogations. https://lnkd.in/ea6gzPDu
