What do thermocouples actually measure in the decay and cooling phases of a fire? Florian investigated this using CFD simulations of an idealized setup. He found that thermocouple measurements are very strongly influenced by the lining temperature - and definitely should not be interpreted as measuring local "gas temperatures". As expected maybe... but we did not foresee to see such big effects. Next, Florian will be investigating concrete properties in the cooling phase at Politecnico di Milano with Roberto Felicetti, as part of his Research Foundation Flanders - FWO research project. #SFE #decay #cooling
Hopefully an interesting paper for anyone performing experiments, in particular temperature measurements, or numerical simulations in the context of fire. Please read Florian's put paper to quantify the difference between gas temperatures and thermocouple temperatures when there is smoke: https://lnkd.in/eTnhiCEk IMFSE MFSE @ Ghent University

🚨 Big Announcement! 🚨 Ramin Yarmohammadian and Andrea Franchini have joined our team as post-doctoral researchers! Their expertise and passion for structural fire engineering is already having an impact on how we work. Can we say we're now the biggest structural fire engineering team in the Benelux? It certainly feels like it! 💪 Alumnus Ranjit chaudhary came over to join our celebrations. Welcome to the team, Ramin and Andrea! 🔥 #fire #research #SFE

**🔍 What fire rating is optimal? 🔥** If you missed Mengying P.'s presentation last month at SiF2024, you can now watch a recording here. Key Takeaway for structural/fire engineers : Increasing fire resistance ratings beyond prescriptive requirements may give the client a net benefit when considering the structure's lifetime performance. The presented work is part of the project "Economic Impact of Fire: Cost and Impact of Fire Protection in Buildings" funded by the NFPA Research Foundation.
