  • Team and Team Effectiveness based on Team Research papers and a bit of my personal Opinion Link to the Team Research Paper: The Science of Team Effectiveness - https://lnkd.in/emWpVfJD " Teams are ubiquitous. Whether we are talking about software development, Olympic hockey, disease outbreak response, or urban warfare, teams represent the critical unit that ‘‘gets things done’’ in today’s world " -The Science of Team Effectiveness. I'm sharing my overall opinion on TEAM as a general concept and some reflection on use of Scrum Team & Development Team in the 2017 Scrum Guides. I've been a part of a high-performing, highly effective team, and here I'm sharing my own opinion based on my own experience. Reflecting on what research on TEAM has published on the subject.

  • How does your entire Sprint support Inspection? In other posts we have covered Sprint Planning, the Daily Scrum, Sprint Review and Sprint Retrospective. What about the Sprint itself? Note that each of the events is a formal opportunity to inspect and adapt. This does immediately mean that during the entire Sprint itself there are informal moments to do just that. As such I expect that the inspection we are performing in each of the events is also maintained throughout the entire Sprint as needed. So that, as a team, if we feel there are undesired variances, we can immediately take action as needed. Do not overact. The team needs sufficient insight before taking decisions. Do not underact. Or you might loose important opportunities for reaching your goals. As a team understand when it is needed to take a closer look at a progress, processes, tools, interactions, and the Definition of Done. Or when you better wait until the foreseen Scrum Event. A delicate balance. Summary: During the entire Sprint the Scrum Team keeps watching out for undesired variances on any aspect of its progress and effectivity. Do you? Prompt: With your entire team evaluate whether some checks for finding undesired variances (i.e. inspecting) would better be done at a higher frequency than the Scrum events allow for. Note that this might also be an indication for shortening your Sprint duration. Interested in more? Watch out for upcoming posts. Don't want to miss any of these posts? • How does your Sprint Retrospective support Inspection? Note 1: Without transparency, one cannot perform a valuable inspection. Note 2: Inspection is about detecting undesirable variances in progressing towards agreed goals. Inspect what? The Sprint itself in its entirety. - Any specific goals for individuals showing deviations? - Any interactions that did not work out as expected? - Any process variations outside expected boundaries? - What about the Definition of Done? Did the team achieve it? What work remains undone? - How about the agreed improvements from the last Sprint Retrospective; were these implemented with the expected results? Sure a team can use a qualitative feeling of how these items performed. If data is available though, make use of it. This again shows the importance of goal and target setting. If no clear targets are agreed, how can a team do a useful Sprint Retrospective? Inspection by whom? By the entire Scrum Team: the Product Owner, the Developers, and the Scrum Master. They collaborated during the Sprint, now it is up to them to inspect themselves how effective they were. Summary: During the Sprint Retrospective, does your Scrum Team look for undesired variances with regards to individuals, interactions, processes, tools, and the Definition of Done? Do you? Prompt: With your entire team, have a conversation about the entire Sprint with regards to effectiveness of individuals, interactions, processes, tools and the Definition of Done. Interested in more? • How does your Sprint Review support Inspection? Note 1: Without transparency, one cannot perform a valuable inspection. Note 2: Inspection is about detecting undesirable variances in progressing towards agreed goals. Inspect what? - Inspect the progress towards the Product Goal. Any undesired variances? - Any variances compared to Done? - Any variances compared to what was expected to have as part of the Increment? What capabilities, features, etc. does it have? What outcomes do we expect of it as it stands? - Any undesired variances during the Sprint itself compared to what was discussed during Sprint Planning (the why, the what, the how)? - Any new insights with regards to the Product Backlog? What would we expect to deliver next? How does the market evolve for our product? And does this show in the Product Backlog? Inspection by whom? By the Scrum Team and any stakeholders. The stakeholders provide key input here. They might point to important variances compared to their expectations which is crucial input for the Product Backlog. We still too often see the Sprint Review as a demo or information session for the Product Owner. Be aware that the Product Owner is part of the team and is expected to be up-to-date about the progress towards the Product Goal at all times. So be sure to have the key stakeholders taking active part in your Sprint Review to receive that very important feedback: the one from the real users. This transparent feedback is key during the Inspection. Summary: During the Sprint Review, the Scrum Team and stakeholders inspect their progress towards the Product Goal to detect undesired variances in their progress. Do you? Prompt: With your entire team, have a conversation about the Product Goal, where you expected to be today, where you are now, and what the variance is between these latter two. Interested in more?
