🌍 Powering the internet of the future! Big IT companies have recently announced investments in nuclear power to supply their data centres, a move predicted by Tractebel in its white paper, “Powering the 4th Industrial Revolution: Pioneering a Data Centre Partnership with Advanced Nuclear Technologies”, published last March. ⚛ Large tech companies are opting for nuclear energy to meet data centres' rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence while seeking to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. 📅 2024 - March: Amazon buys nuclear-powered data centre from Talen Energy - September: Microsoft announces a deal with Constellation to restart the nuclear power plant of Three Mile Island - October: - Google orders over 6 reactors from Kairos Power, a nuclear technology company - Amazon announces an investment of half a billion dollars in X-energy, an advanced Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology developer 💡 At Tractebel, we are at the forefront of these developments. Our white paper, “Powering the 4th Industrial Revolution”, published jointly with RED Engineering Design, showcases our deep expertise in how SMRs can provide net-zero, reliable, and sustainable energy to data centres, supporting their exponential long-term growth. SMRs will consolidate the data centre sector’s role as a cornerstone of the 4th industrial revolution. 📖 Discover more in our White Paper ( 🔗 link in the first comment)! ⚛ Unlocking the Potential of Small Modular Reactors for Industrial Applications! Last week, our expert, Célestin Piette presented a paper written jointly with Laurentis Energy Partners and Hatch entitled "Supporting Industrial Applications of SMRs: Deployment Considerations" at the Canadian Nuclear Association Generation IV and Small Reactors conference in Ottawa, Canada. 🏭 As countries worldwide commit to net zero emission targets, low carbon energies like nuclear are increasingly required. The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency indicates that tripling global installed nuclear capacity provides "a clear and realistic path to reach net zero by 2050.” SMRs are Smaller, Simpler and Standardized Modular Reactors. They can offer a sustainable, cost-effective, flexible and reliable solution to reduce the industry's carbon footprint. They can complement intermittent renewables, produce clean hydrogen near end-users, desalinate water and provide electricity and heat to data centres and the hard-to-abate sectors. ⏩ To move forward with SMR deployment, industries can take several non-regret actions: 💹 Assess compatibility: conduct inception studies to define suitability Enhance compatibility: start with easy retrofit & improve asset compatibility 🥇 Set up organizational readiness: provide training & appoint leadership 🤝 Build stakeholder support: engage local authorities & expand network 🗺 Secure sites: conduct site assessments & secure sufficient land ownership 🔗 The paper is available via the Canadian Nuclear Association for members and #G4SR delegates only (link available in the first comment). 🛰 Happy World Space Week! Tractebel leads three European projects that aim to develop advanced nuclear technologies for space exploration paving the way for Europe to become an autonomous global leader in this field. 🔋 PULSAR Euratom: Funded by the European Commission, this project focuses on developing radioisotope power systems (RPS) fueled by plutonium-238 (Pu-238) within Europe. These RPS systems are critical for providing electricity and heat to spacecraft in environments where the sun does not supply sufficient power, such as deep space missions or on the moon during lunar nights. 🌕 ESA Optimus Pro: This project part of the European Space Agency - ESA Endure program complements the Euratom PULSAR project mentioned above. It explores how to optimise the industrialisation of Pu-238 production on European soil. 🚀 ESA RocketRoll: This ambitious project, led by ESA, explores the potential of Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) for future space missions. By 2035, we aim to present a suitable NEP design as a European demonstrator. This technology will enable Europe to conduct long-duration missions, including manned missions to Mars. Watch out for more information SOON! 🛣 By leveraging our nuclear expertise and innovative solutions, we help advance space technologies and push the boundaries of the final frontier’s exploration! 🚀 Exciting Milestone for the Forbach Pumped Storage Power Plant Expansion! Our Munich project team, led by Martin Strack, had the privilege of attending the groundbreaking tunnel blast for the expansion and modernization of the 100-year-old Forbach pumped storage power plant. This project will play a crucial role in supporting the energy transition by providing much-needed storage capacity by 2027. Once completed, the plant will be able to generate electricity continuously for up to 30,000 households for 7 hours straight and help stabilize fluctuations in the power grid. ⚡🔋 Tractebel Hydroprojekt GmbH, in collaboration with our partners GEOCONSULT consulting engineers, has been a leading force in the planning of this ambitious project, bringing our extensive expertise to the table from the early conceptual stages. The blasting work is already underway, and we’ll soon share exciting underground progress pictures! 🏗️🌍 The project kicked off with the ceremonial tunnel blast, marking the start of construction on the access tunnel to the power plant's cavern. Over the coming months, miners will dig deep into the mountain, creating two large caverns—one of which will house the power plant's cutting-edge turbines and generators, while the other will serve as a massive water reservoir. 🏞️🔧 Stay tuned as we continue to share updates on this key energy transition project. The plant's commissioning is planned for autumn 2027. 🌱 For more details, check out the updates from our project partner, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, and recent ARD coverage. #Sustainability #BatteryStorage #GreenFuture #WeAreTractebel #EngineeringACarbonNeutralFuture #Engineering #Innovation #OneTeam #Teamwork

🌍 Looking back at a successful European Sustainable Development Week at Tractebel! From September 23 to 27, 2024, Tractebel’s Sustainable Development Week was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiastic engagement of our employees across France. Together, we rose to the challenge of raising awareness and mobilising around ecological issues, and the results speak for themselves! 📢 The week kicked off with a conference on “Environmental Excellence at Tractebel in France.” Many employees from across the country attended, presenting our environmental commitments and discussing ways to strengthen them. 🚶♂️The next day, we took action with a Clean Walk at Tractebel in France headquarters, in partnership with the association La Récolte Citadine. Twenty motivated participants collected 28 kg of waste, raising awareness about the importance of protecting our environment. A great collective effort that inspired enthusiasm and a desire to do more! 🧠 Some participants also took part in a Climate Fresk workshop. This collaborative activity helped participants better understand the challenges of climate change. By reconstructing the causes and consequences of global warming, this fun and educational experience provided valuable insights into the complexity of climate challenges. 🤝 Throughout the week, the teams in France also organized a collection of clothes and items for Emmaüs Coup de main charity, gathering dozens of bags filled with clothes, small appliances, and everyday items. This initiative allowed everyone to give a second life to their belongings while supporting those in need. 🌱 We are proud of our teams’ dedication and their desire to continue acting for a cleaner and more sustainable planet. Together, we can make a difference! Thank you all for your participation and enthusiasm! A big thank you to Sarah MHIRI, Milad Molina, Asmaa EL SHANDIDI, Henda TROJETTE for putting together all these activities. #Sustainability #TeamWork #Clean #Planet #WeAreTractebel #EngineeringACarbonNeutralFuture
