"Turning Powerpoints into Power Plants" - Equinor is at the forefront of delivering new wind energy capacity around the world. But investment conditions are far from ideal. And more work needs to be done on safety. Our #WindEurope2025 Annual Event Ambassador Anders Hangeland, SVP Engineering, Procurement, Construction & Digital at Equinor, explains what we need to get right to put offshore wind back on track. ‘’Adopt these rules now to get more cheap and clean wind power!’’ Last weekend EU Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera, representatives of the EU and national Parliaments gathered at the 25th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on renewable energy at the Belgian House of Representatives. WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson explained how permitting is holding back the clean energy transition. It only takes one year to build an onshore wind farm. But developers often wait five years or longer to get their permits. There’s a very simple solution for national Governments: implement the new permitting rules laid out by the EU. Especially ‘Overriding Public Interest’ (OPI). Germany was one of the few countries to fully adopt OPI in national law. Now projects don’t end up in court as much as they used to. And permitting authorities feel more comfortable approving projects than they used to. Germany permitted 15 GW of new onshore wind farms in 2024. That’s seven times more than they had permitted five years ago! Giles Dickson said: “Just put the 3 words “overriding public interest” in their laws and make sure the courts apply them. More Member States need to adopt these rules now to get more cheap and clean wind power!’’ 📸 Photos: Bénédicte Maindiaux - www.benedictemaindiaux.com

NKT is building the world’s largest offshore cable factory to meet Europe’s growing clean tech demand. We do not only need more wind turbines to reach the EU’s energy security and climate targets, we crucially also need more cables! Europe’s wind and grid supply chain is ramping up to meet growing demand. WindEurope Member NKT has invested €2bn since 2020 to increase its cable manufacturing capacity. We visited their site in Karlskrona, Sweden. With an investment of more than €1bn, they are transforming it into the world’s largest offshore cable factory, creating 500 additional jobs. This will also allow for the construction of NKT Eleonora – the world’s first cable-laying vessel able to run on carbon-neutral e-methanol. The green transition ‘Made in Europe’ is happening!

Converter platforms: Bringing renewable electricity from offshore wind farms to land In the second episode of #WindWorksForEurope, WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson visits Rostock, Germany. Here Smulders and MEYER WERFT are teaming up to build converter platforms for Europe’s biggest offshore substations. Under the name 'Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables' they are setting up a new #manufacturing site in the shipyard of Warnemünde. It's a prime example of how wind energy creates growth and jobs in coastal regions - and just one of many recent investments along Europe's wind energy #supplychain. 💡 We can't have a successful energy transition without having Europe’s citizens on our side. The good news is that a majority of Europeans are in favour of more wind energy. And developers already do a lot to engage communities. But issues with particular projects persist. How can the industry improve this? And how can we tackle the increasing amounts of fake news? Join Guy Willems on 8 April at #WindEurope2025 as we discuss this issue with developers. They will be challenged to show their own creative approaches to community engagement. And we’ll test whether the audience is capable of recognising all fake news about wind! 🔍 Check out his sessions https://lnkd.in/eKATASDB https://lnkd.in/eNT2SYd5 ▶ See the full programme https://lnkd.in/etq4JuGw 📝 Register for the Annual Event https://lnkd.in/e5ai3mAR Guy Willems WindEurope
