🚀 We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Marcus Collins, celebrated author and marketing expert, to the Shift podcast right after his keynote at #Inventures2024. In our discussion, Marcus explained how culture is a powerful force shaping human behavior, describing it as the ultimate influencer on everything from what we wear to how we talk. One insight that stood out? Artifacts, or the tangible things we use, are "outward manifestations of inward beliefs." Marcus broke down how we adopt these "artifacts" because they resonate with the culture we align ourselves with, showing others we belong. This conversation dives into the deep layers of culture that influence our everyday decisions. 🎙️ Curious to hear more? Tune in to Shift and let’s dive into the power of culture together! The Harmful Algal Blooms monitoring project has had a successful second field season. Though we faced more challenges when it came to collecting our samples (more cloudy and smoky days when the #Sentinel2 satellite was flying over to capture imagery of the lakes), we still managed to nearly meet our goals. For the second season in a row, #lake #watersamples were collected at the same time the #sentinel2 #satellite flew directly overhead collecting imagery. The #satelliteimagery is used to estimate chlorophyll-a concentrations (a green pigment found in algae), and the water samples are analyzed at the University of Alberta to identify types and concentrations of #algae or #cyanobacteria present, and to test #waterquality. By combining these data, researchers can develop models of current and historical blooms, and eventually predict future blooms, too! In 2025 we plan to launch an online Google Earth Engine app, freely available to anyone, to visualize and track blooms on their lakes of interest in "near real time," and to look at historical blooms. Stay tuned for project updates! A big shout-out to the tireless staff at ALMS for leading our field sampling efforts, and the staff and volunteers of all of our collaborating partner organizations for contributing their time and resources to this project. Want to read more? Check out our blog post from last year about this project: https://lnkd.in/gQRzht5z We’d like to thank Alberta Innovates for funding this work, and acknowledge all of the important project collaborators: the University of Alberta, the Alberta Lake Management Society, Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Associated Environmental Consultants, the Pigeon Lake Watershed Association, Lac La Biche County, and the Wabamun Watershed Management Council. #watersamples #satelliteimagery #harmfulalgalblooms #phytoplankton #cyanobacteria #waterquality #Albertalakes #algalblooms
