Data from a new Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) report Taking the Pulse: Measuring shared priorities for Canadian health care, 2024 highlights the urgent need for action to tackle prolonged wait times for joint replacement surgeries. Key points include: • Hip and knee replacements are 2 of the 3 most common inpatient surgeries. • Between April and September 2023, over 66,000 planned hip/knee replacements were performed. • Only 62% of these surgeries met the benchmark wait time of 26 weeks, down from 72% in 2019. • The percentage of patients getting surgery within the benchmark varied greatly across the country (29% in PEI to 77% in ON). Reducing wait times for joint-replacement surgery demands attention at all levels of the government. Arthritis Awareness Month is about drawing attention to the health crisis that is arthritis. We are deeply thankful for our partners who allow us to do this, including one of our lead sponsors, Organon Canada. The progress we have made this Arthritis Awareness Month, and the successes we enjoy year-round, wouldn’t be possible without such generosity.
