The BC SUPPORT Unit is a multi-partner organization create to support patient-oriented research in British Columbia.
About us
Part of Michael Smith Health Research BC, the BC SUPPORT (Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials) Unit supports, streamlines and increases patient-oriented research throughout BC. Patient-oriented research is done in partnership with patients, answers research questions that matter to patients, and aims to improve health care. The Unit is one of several SUPPORT Units established across the country as part of Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Along with partner organizations, a Provincial Hub based in Vancouver serves stakeholders within the Vancouver region and provides province-wide services. Four additional regional centres (Fraser Centre, Interior Centre, Northern Centre and Vancouver Island Centre) are the first point of contact for stakeholders located outside of the Vancouver region. Services include providing services to researchers, patients, health care providers and health system decision makers, and facilitating initiatives identified as provincial priorities.

Did you know that patient partners can help with data collection? They can carry out interviews, surveys or focus groups. With their lived experience, they can shape the way that information about their communities is gathered and conveyed. Like every journey, every research project is unique. Our road map tool guides you through ways that patient and public partners can meaningfully engage in a project, from start to finish. Explore the map: https://lnkd.in/gejuQmdS

We transform how people’s experiences shape health research and health care. “People’s lived experiences have the power to transform health research,” said Monica Mamut, unit director, BC SUPPORT Unit. “That’s why we’re continuing to engage patients, partner on data and build learning communities. Over the next three years, we’ll create sustainable change to improve people’s health in BC.” Download our fact sheet and read about our impact: https://lnkd.in/gPYEh258 Michael Smith Health Research BC Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada

Dr. Davina Banner-Lukaris advances the practice of patient-oriented research. In this interview, Davina speaks on authentic engagement and how taking a leap of faith into patient-oriented research changed her life. She also shares the joy and heartbreak of engaging people with lived experience. “I think the beauty and depths of the relationships you build are amazing. That surprised me. You work so closely with people, you become colleagues, you become friends, you then become family.” “But there’s hard things that can come with that. With complex health conditions, people deteriorate, experience health crises. That’s the emotional reality of these partnerships. Patient partnerships humanize the research process. When a patient partner shares their experiences, we all become patients.” Davina Banner-Lukaris is a professor and interim associate vice president research operations at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Earlier this year, Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), which is supported by many partners including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, provincial health research funders and others, concluded an engagement process to refresh the Strategy. Today, the National Alliance of Provincial Health Research Organizations (NAPHRO) – a key partner of the SPOR program – and CIHR are inviting the community to read the early analytical reports summarizing the input received from community members on the seven refresh engagement themes on the NAPHRO website: https://lnkd.in/dhAaKviq

“Living rural and remote gives you a unique perspective on health,” says Paul Burgener, a patient partner and resident of Nelson, BC. “Your closest hospital could be hours away. Sometimes you can’t get any Wi-Fi or cell coverage. To reach the next town over, you might have to drive around a mountain or a lake.” In BC, rural and remote communities face unique challenges when it comes to health. It can also be difficult for patients to share their perspectives with the health system. That’s why the Patient Engagement in Research (PEiR) Committee exists. Part of the BC SUPPORT Unit, Interior Centre and the Interior Health research department, the PEiR Committee embeds patient perspectives in research and health care.
