About us
The Britannia Mine Museum is a self-sustaining, non-profit organization, that creates accessible learning experiences to inspire discovery and connection through guided interpretive programming, self-exploration opportunities, and the preservation of our historical site and artifacts. Governed by the Britannia Mine Museum Society, the museum allows guests to leave with a better understanding of mining in British Columbia; past, present and future. Britannia Mine museum features the iconic Mill building, a National Historic Site as well as many other exhibits and programs. We underwent significant re-branding and renovations in 2010 and have been continuing to grow and innovate ever since, including the launch of BOOM!, a multi-sensory show, in 2019. Our Vision is to deliver an entertaining; world class experience that encourages an informed understanding of mining and its' impact to the environment, communities and sustainability. Britannia Mine Museum’s ability to offer relevant, innovative, engaging and adventuresome learning opportunities has helped us draw increasing numbers of visitors from around the world, and attract a strong and diverse donor base. As a registered charity operated by a small but passionate staff team, we pride ourselves on our self-sufficiency, with our primary sources of revenue coming through memberships, admissions, site rentals, the Museum's Gift Shop, Café, and donations.

The Billwiller family went to several mines while living and working at Britannia Mines! Today, we look at one such travel expedition, where they go to The Bingham Canyon Mine, more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine, in Utah, United States. Bingham is the deepest open pit mine in the world! The Billwiller footage shows us the open pit operations, ore carts, the smelter, and even the tailings pond! At the time of closure in 1974, the Britannia Mines met the environmental standards of the day! However, 50 million Liters of toxic water kept flowing into the Howe Sound every day and by the 1990s, the mine site had become one of the worst metal polluters to marine life in North America. In 2005, the EPCOR plant was introduced, helping us recover the ecosystem of Howe Sound. Similarly, in the 1990s, remediation efforts were introduced to clean up 100 years of accumulated impacts at The Bingham Canyon Mine with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and federal government oversight. Efforts are ongoing! Our exhibit, ORE and ORCAS, explains how remediation is taking place here in BC and how marine life is returning to the Howe Sound. Come explore this exhibit that features a real Killer Whale Skeleton! The skeleton comes to us in partnership with our aquatic friends atThe Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society in Tofino, BC. It's Mineral Monday with Laura and, today we are taking a closer look at Lazurite! Lazurite is a tectosilicate mineral with the chemical formula Na7Ca(Al6Si6O24)(SO4)(S3) · H2O. Lazurite is the blue component of the 'gemstone' Lapis Lazuli, which is a lazurite-calcite-pyrite rock that has been mined as a gem material for some 6,000 years. If you would like to know more about Lazurite, or other minerals, come on down to Britannia Mine Museum for a visit! Fun and Discovery await @BritanniaMineMuseum. #Lazurite #MineralMonday #MoreThanAMine #ExceedingExpectations #ExploreBC #ExploreSquamish #DestinationBC #ScienceRocks #DiscoverSquamish
