The Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO) connects Canadians with the work of UNESCO. Its aim is to create a society in which Canadians share knowledge and learn from each other, in order to build peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures. CCUNESCO acts as a forum for governments and civil society that encourages Canadian organizations and individuals to participate in UNESCO’s work in the fields of education, natural, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information. The Commission also consults civil society and various levels of government to prepare Canada’s contribution to UNESCO and to implement UNESCO programs and activities in Canada. Did you know that the Viola Irene Desmond Court Records were added to the Canada Memory of the World Register in 2021? Viola Irene Desmond (née Davis, 1914–1965), an African Nova Scotian businesswoman, was arrested in 1946 for refusing to move from the "whites only" section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow. Charged with tax evasion over a 1-cent difference in seating, she challenged the conviction in the Supreme Court, marking Canada’s first legal fight against racial segregation by a Black woman and a pivotal moment in civil rights history. This material is an important legal record of racial discrimination in Nova Scotia in the 1940’s and one woman’s fight against an unjust conviction. Oki! I had the wonderful opportunity to facilitate a documentation workshop for Blackfoot students in my ancestral territory (treaty 7 territory). I was invited by Dr. Heather Bliss and Ken Fox to help facilitate a workshop with Blackfoot high school students. We followed the documentation toolkit I published in partnership with CCUNESCO and SILR. The workshop was completely hands-on. I must say I am incredibly impressed by the students. They were so respectful and tech savvy. They ended up being pros in the end! The students were able to learn skills in how to ethically document Blackfoot, different types of content (some students documented Blackfoot stories, greetings, kinship terms, daily phrases) and they learned how to elicit the content from the elders as well. Using wordlist, question and answer, and more. It was an amazing workshop in which the youth were encouraged to practice skills and for the elders to work with the youth. I am beyond grateful to my Blackfoot family and relatives for their openness to me. Everytime I visit treaty 7 territory I always meet more and more of my family! Congrats to the students for being amazing and they received school credit for this workshop on their week off! 🤎🪶

The month of February is an opportunity to learn more about Black Canadian history. This includes reflecting on the distinct challenges that Black people in Canada have faced. On October 9th, 2024, Africville was officially designated by UNESCO as Canada’s first Place of History and Memory linked to Enslavement and the Slave Trade. Located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, this historic site is a living symbol of the fight against racism and pays tribute to the important legacies of Black communities across North America. This designation is part of UNESCO’s program The Routes of Enslaved Peoples, launched 30 years ago to support memorial initiatives on the histories of slavery, its abolition, and the resistance movements it generated. Let us be reminded of the importance of preserving collective memory as we continue the struggle to defend human rights for all; a value that stands at the core of UNESCO's mission. Il s'agit notamment d'une période de réflexion sur les défis particuliers auxquels elles ont été confrontées. Le 9 octobre 2024, Africville a été désigné par l’UNESCO comme le premier « Lieu d’histoire et de mémoire lié à l’esclavage et à la traite » au Canada.
