We are cattle country. / Nous sommes la terre des bovins!
About us
We’re the voice of Canada’s 60,000 beef producers. We’re here to tell the story of our longstanding commitment to our planet, people, animals and progress. We are dynamic, forward-thinking, diversifying, climate positive and quintessentially Canadian. We are cattle country. Structure The CCA is a non-profit federation comprised of nine provincial member cattle associations that provide representation to a national, producer-led board of directors. The 27-member board provides the leadership and unity necessary to speak as one voice on issues of importance to the beef cattle industry. CCA’s operating divisions carry out the day-to-day business in support of the vision, policies and recommendations established by the board. Funding The CCA is funded through fee assessments to its provincial cattle association members. The assessments are based on yearly cattle marketing records for each province as a percentage of the total Canadian marketing. This percentage is then applied against the CCA budget as approved by the CCA Board of Directors. Provinces pay this membership to the CCA from the provincial portion of their check-off revenues. In some provinces, this portion of the check-off may be refundable. Vision The CCA’s vision is to have a dynamic, profitable Canadian beef industry with high-quality beef products recognized as the most outstanding by customers at home and around the world.

Today marks #WorldFoodDay and we’re excited to have a young leader from the #CdnBeef industry contributing to global conversations on food security and sustainability. A special shoutout to Evan Chaffe, a sixth generation young beef farmer from Ontario and Policy Advisor with Beef Farmers of Ontario, who is attending the World Food Forum in Rome this week. Evan is attending through his role as Co-Chair of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) Youth Advisory Group and North American Representative, joined by a few of his other GASL youth counterparts. His participation underscores the critical role of livestock in advancing sustainable food systems to feed a growing global population.

The National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health (NCCEH | CCNSE) is hosting a webinar called, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza: Adapting to a new One Health challenge from an old foe. Our Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System division coordinator, Dr. Murray Gillies, will provide an update on #HPAI in dairy cattle in the US, and the collaborative work of Canadian #One #Health stakeholders. See details to register in the post below.
New webinar with National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health (NCCEH | CCNSE) - our Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System (division of Animal Health Canada) Coordinator Dr. Murray Gillies will provide an update on #HPAI in dairy cattle in the US, and the collaborative work of Canadian #One #Health stakeholders. This talk will begin by briefly discussing animal health surveillance in Canada and the role of the Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System (CAHSS). CAHSS is a distinct division of Animal Health Canada and uses a network of network approach to bring together and use data-driven information to demonstrate animal health, minimize impacts of disease, and guide planning on national animal health priorities. This system was put to the test following the detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype B3.13 in dairy cattle in the United states which widely and rapidly spread across the country and continues to cause problems. To date the US has reported 296 affected herds with frequent spill over into poultry operations resulting in the depopulation of around 17.6 million birds. The US Center for Disease Control has also reported 14 human cases, mostly among dairy and poultry workers. However, they have also reported one human case in Missouri with no known animal exposure and illnesses among other close contacts. This outbreak has been unprecedented and unexpected and remains difficult to control in the US. Fortunately, Canada has found success driven by a multi-stakeholder collaborative approach which we hope to continue to leverage in preparing for outbreaks in our animal agricultural sectors. The National Beef Sustainability Assessment is a key tool for communicating the environmental, economic, and social benefits of Canadian beef production. With data-backed results, like grasslands storing 1.9 billion tons of carbon, it's a powerful way to build public trust in sustainable practices across the industry. Efforts like these help close the gap between farms and consumers, showcasing how the beef sector contributes to a more sustainable future. Are we better off in a world without cows? With unique access to those on the frontlines of agriculture and science, two journalists set out on an incredible journey around the world to find out the answer to this simple question. Through conversations with experts in environmental and agricultural science, Michelle Michael and Brandon Whitworth examined the real impact of cows on our world: their cultural and economic significance, their role in nourishing the world and their impact on climate. What they found was far from simple: When it comes to cows, it’s not black and white. Join us for a screening of #WorldWithoutCows, sponsored by Alltech, on September 30, 2024, at the #GlobalConferenceonSustainableBeef in Punta del Este, Uruguay. We assess and approve livestock feeds used in Canada to check that they are safe, effective, and nutritious for Canadian animals. A healthy diet supports healthy animals, reducing the need for antimicrobials like antibiotics. This important measure helps combat antimicrobial resistance. It was great to connect with some Canadian Cattle Young Leaders alumni at the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) AGM this week including CRSB's very own Chair, Ryan Beierbach, and their Member Engagement Manager, Cassandra DeMars. It's great to see where our grads are in the industry now and to hear about how the connections they made in the #CdnCYL program helped get them where they are today!
