This week, Childhood Cancer Canada’s Director of Development, Kyle Smith, is attending the Children's Healthcare Canada conference to focus on right-sizing health systems for kids in Canada. The conference is focused on identifying and fixing issues that are currently impacting care and support for both children and families. Childhood Cancer Canada’s presence at this conference underscores our dedication to working collaboratively with all groups across the country involved in a child and their family's journey after a cancer diagnosis. We are stronger together. #Childhealthcan24
Right sizing healthcare systems for children… what does that mean? This weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Children's Healthcare Canada's Right Sizing Healthcare for Kids Conference. The conference brings together dedicated professionals, advocates, and innovators, all united by a common goal: to improve the health and well-being of children and their families across Canada. Each discussion reinforced the importance of our mission at Childhood Cancer Canada. Although this conference is not over, there have been many impactful moments and dicsussions. Many of which revolve around supporting the entire family unit through the journey. The right sizing of healthcare may begin in a medical setting, but the scope extends far beyond direct medical needs. At Childhood Cancer Canada, we are driven by the belief that no childhood should be lost to cancer. This conference has further ignited our passion to ensure that every child and family receives the comprehensive care they need. From funding innovative research to providing essential support services to remove barriers and burdens, we are dedicated to making a tangible impact. Together, we are navigating towards a brighter future for all children. PS: check out the Beyond Bandaids report - https://lnkd.in/ehxCFgeZ #childhealthcan24

When a child learns that their sibling has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, they may experience a whirlwind of emotions and questions. These feelings can be complex and may change over time. Engaging in open conversations with your child about the situation and allowing them space to express their thoughts and emotions can help them navigate the changes happening in their lives. While these discussions can be challenging, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is here with five tips to support families during this difficult conversation. Sometime childhood cancer patients have to travel to receive clinical trials and advanced treatments. Kindred Foundation understands that additional financial support allows families to focus on being a healthy family. Thank you Kindred Foundation, for supporting families in need.
For Canadian families facing childhood cancer, accessing advanced treatments often requires travelling long distances for clinical trials. While these trials may offer promising new therapies, they can come with significant costs associated with transportation, accommodation, meals and other expenses. These pictures were shared by a family who received support from the U-Link Patient & Family Fund, along with the following quote, "Family Fund has been able to help cushion the impact of our daughter’s health situation. Migrating to a new country and facing a daunting health challenge can be tedious on everyone. Thank you U-Link Patient & Family Fund for your timely and kind assistance. Our family is ever grateful." Kindred Foundation, in partnership with Phoebe Rose Rocks, created the U-Link Patient and Family Fund to provide financial assistance to Canadian families who must travel to access clinical trials for their child, adolescent, or young adult with cancer. Each family can receive up to $2,000 annually, to help ensure that travel cost is not a barrier for families and that cancer treatment is within reach for every child. https://lnkd.in/drpuiwM4

Sarcomas are a rare and diverse group of cancers that occur in the bone and soft tissues and account for less than one percent of all pediatric cancer diagnoses. Because they are uncommon, high-risk pediatric sarcomas are difficult to study, which, in turn, has led to a substantial knowledge gap. This knowledge gap includes a lack of progress in understanding the mechanisms behind the relapse and spread (metastasis) of these high-risk sarcomas and has resulted in a delay in translating research evidence into improved patient outcomes. The national Sarcoma MetAstasis Research Taskforce (SMART) project aims to bring together experts in sarcoma pathology, biology, model systems, molecular technologies, and drug screening to identify biomarkers for preventing and treating relapse and metastasis in high-risk pediatric sarcomas.
