The Equality Fund is proud to support the Wapichan Women’s Movement in their efforts to combat the climate crisis. Although the Indigenous Wapichan community hasn’t caused this crisis, they are leveraging their traditional knowledge and practices to protect their lands and people, despite challenges like unrecognized territories and encroaching mining interests. The Wapichan Women’s Movement empowers women to take up leadership roles and shape the future of their community. From training across 21 communities to hosting a conference on climate resilience, they are driving meaningful change. Participants have explored strengthening village governance for sustainable development, and advocating for policy changes through the ongoing Amerindian Act revision process, which could finally recognize their land rights. Together, we are amplifying Indigenous leadership and advancing climate resilience.

    • “To ensure climate justice for all, we need to be able to protect our lands and natural resources. We also need solidarity from our friends internationally as we work to ensure respect for our rights, including our rights to free, prior, and informed consent.” - Immaculata Casimero, Wapichan Women’s Movement

Feminist activists, especially Indigenous women and environmental and human rights defenders, lead the charge for climate justice at great personal risk, often facing retaliation and threats to their health and safety. It’s our responsibility to match their courage and support them by funding from a place of potential and opportunity. ✊ https://buff.ly/4eRlh9N

    • Since 2021, 1,910 people who were defending their land and environment have been killed. Among them, 34% were from Indigenous communities.
    • Despite the dangers they face, these leaders and movement builders persevere.
    • Donors should match their courage with funding and political support.

Spotlight on Helen's Daughters: Championing Women in Agriculture In Saint Lucia, women play a critical yet often unrecognized role in agriculture. Helen’s Daughters is changing that narrative by supporting women farmers to embrace sustainable, climate-smart practices. From education and training to health and wellness, their holistic approach is transforming the agricultural landscape and redefining what it means to be a woman in the field. Swipe through to learn more about how Helen’s Daughters is leading this vital change.

    • Meet Helen’s Daughters. A Leader in Saint Lucia’s Agricultural Landscape
    • In Saint Lucia, gender norms mean that women’s valuable participation in the agriculture value chain is often under-acknowledged and under-supported.
    • In response, Helen’s Daughters is supporting existing and prospective women famers to use sustainable, climate smart agriculture.
    • Its holistic programmes include education (training programs, scholarships, apprenticeships), farmer supports (subsidies, market access), and health & wellness (rural health clinics, medical insurance).
    • One of Helen’s Daughters’ most profound impacts is redefining what it means to be a woman in the agricultural field, starting with how women farmers view themselves.
