About us

In practice since 1990, ERA Architects Inc. has over 85 staff members based in Toronto, Montréal, and Ottawa. The founding principals of ERA are members of the Ontario Association of Architects and the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP), and are Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Architecture Recent and ongoing architectural projects in building conservation and adaptive reuse include Toronto’s Distillery District; Maple Leaf Gardens; Renaissance ROM; Transformation AGO; the Evergreen Brick Works; Union Station; the Artscape Wychwood Barns; Bridgepoint Health (the former Don Jail); Massey Tower; La Cour d’appel du Québec; and the Government Conference Centre. Planning Within our planning expertise we have a particular interest in regional and neighbourhood cultural planning; in cultural landscapes and their regeneration; and in facilitating community consultation of all stakeholders, as the democratic basis of good planning. Significant planning work includes the Tower Neighbourhood Renewal Project in Toronto; Union Station Heritage Precinct, Toronto Cultural Institutions Public Realm Study, the Culture of Outports program; and numerous Heritage Conservation District Plans and other studies in in Toronto, Hamilton, Peterborough, Kingston, Picton, and other parts of Ontario. Values Our core interest is in connecting heritage to wider considerations of urban design and city building, and to a larger set of cultural values that provide perspective to our work at every scale. Our core values are in generating professional integrity and expertise through research, education and mentoring. To that end ERA frequently works collaboratively with other firms to engage in city building, conserving heritage architecture and improving the built environment. We also generate publications and exhibitions related to Toronto and to Canada’s built environment.

  • It’s March 14th! Happy π Day! From grand domes to grain silos, circular geometries have long played a role in architectural design. Here’s a look at some of our favourite radial forms in ERA’s portfolio; because great design is always worth going full circle for. 😉 Images 1-2: The Canada Malting Silos stand as a reminder of the industrial history of the Toronto’s western harbourfront. ERA prepared a conservation plan for the silos and oversaw conservation work to these giant concrete cylinders. Image 3-4: University of Toronto’s perfectly radial Convocation Hall was designed by Toronto firm Darling & Pearson. ERA led the design of upgrades to the hall in 2007. Image 3: A-Frame Studio Images 5-6: Located on Toronto’s Waterfront, Coronation Park is a living memorial, with groves of silver maples commemorating the service and sacrifice of Canada’s military in World War I with a circular path. Arranged around the Empire Circle, each grove of trees represents a different Troop or Division. ERA served as the landscape architect and oversaw construction. #PiDay #Architecture #CircularDesign

  • We're pleased to share that a new book featuring contributions from ERA staff is now available for purchase! “Architecture and Videogames: Intersecting Worlds" is a new publication that examines the relationship between virtual environments, which have developed in recent decades as settings for digital play, and the physical spaces where everyday life takes place. Zak Fish and Michael Otchie were invited to contribute to this publication, sharing their insights on how digital tools used in game production are influencing the documentation of Heritage Architecture and fostering new methods of memorialization. 📸Pictured: Digital documentation tools in action at Turbine Hall in the Hearn Generating Station. • This Black History Month, ERA is excited to share an ongoing project by our Interpreting Slavery, Trauma, and Heritage Initiative: The Lost Black Churches Research Project. In collaboration with University of Toronto student Camilla Hoang, ERA documented lost Black church sites in the former Ward neighbourhood of Toronto. The project team expressed these findings using three-dimensional models arranged on multilayered translucent maps to animate how the churches' contexts changed over time. Exploring Black heritage through this alternative medium offered a tactile sense of play that can help overcome barriers to collective remembrance and make these histories accessible in new ways. • On Day 4️⃣ of #HeritageWeek, we’ll explore 35 Walmer in the Annex.  The interpretation panel at the forecourt of 35 Walmer, highlights this iconic architectural landmark by prominent Toronto modernist architect Uno Prii. Added as part of ERA’s 2018 architectural and landscape rehabilitation work, the panel integrates wayfinding and historical content encouraging a discovery walk of iconic Uno Prii towers in the Annex neighbourhood.  The outcome is a richer understanding and appreciation for the heritage of Toronto’s modernist towers. ........
