In the aftermath of 9/11, amidst the grief and rubble, first responders and tradespeople emerged as heroes, demonstrating unparalleled bravery and dedication. Many ironworkers came to Ground Zero, who were needed to cut through huge pieces of metal to clear a path for first responders as they sought to locate and retrieve victims of the attack. They all worked tirelessly to clean up and rebuild NYC, often at great personal risk. 🚧 September is quickly approaching, but a lot of young people out there aren’t eager to go back to school. It’s important that we engage students with ALL kinds of education, and that includes introducing them to the trades! The good news is school boards have largely wised up, and are (re) introducing skilled trades learning and co-op programs for high school students. We’ll be highlighting some of these initiatives this month, starting with the @tdsboyap STEP to Construction program, which offers Grade 11/12 students a semester-long co-op experience on a job site, exploring multiple skilled trades like electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and more. Participants will also earn dual credits at George Brown College in Construction Health and Safety, along with valuable safety certificates. The July 16 rainstorm in Toronto was a stark reminder of the challenges we face with aging infrastructure in the era of climate change.
