HCA is excited to share our latest collaboration with Nature at McMaster! Together, we've embarked on a unique restoration project along the lower Ancaster Creek using an innovative approach. By repurposing discarded Christmas trees and biodegradable twine, we've constructed a sediment mat to trap fine materials within the stream. This eco-friendly solution is designed to restore the creek's over-widened banks, improve stream flow, and enhance fish passage. This project not only recycles holiday leftovers in a sustainable way but also restores vital creek habitats. We're proud to combine conservation efforts with creative recycling to benefit our local ecosystems. Stay tuned for more updates on this green initiative!

Ever wonder how old a turtle might be? It turns out, determining the age of a snapping turtle is not so straightforward! Environmental factors like food availability and temperature significantly influence their growth. While it's tricky to pinpoint their exact age, studies, like one from Guelph University, offer some insights. A snapping turtle about 30 cm long could be anywhere from 25 to 170 years old, with a median age around 70 years. These creatures grow quickly as hatchlings but slow down as they age. 🐢💚 You can attempt to age a turtle by counting the annuli rings on the scutes—the keratin scales on their shells, similar to aging trees or fish. However, these rings reflect growth spurts rather than exact years, often tied to food abundance. This blend of nature's mystery and science's attempt to unravel it reminds us of the complex beauty of our ecosystems. 🔗 Dive deeper into the study and learn more about these ancient wanderers of waterways: https://lnkd.in/guJfV6-T

I had an incredible experience volunteering with the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) and Green Venture (Hamilton-Wentworth Green Venture) today! 🌿 Together, we worked on removing invasive species from a restoration site at king street East and Nash Road South Hamilton Ontario L8K1Y7, previously planted by Green Venture (Hamilton-Wentworth Green Venture) volunteers. This series of removals is funded in part by the #InvasiveSpeciesActionFund Invasive species such as sweet pea, crown vetch, and thistle creates dense understories, limiting tree and shrub growth and outcompeting native species. This removal will help biodiversity and habitat quality in the watershed, allow for the continue restoration of the site and connect volunteers with Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) and Green Venture (Hamilton-Wentworth Green Venture) staff to learn more about efforts to combat invasive species. It was inspiring to see the community come together for such an important cause. A big thank you to Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) and Green Venture (Hamilton-Wentworth Green Venture) for organizing these impactful events. I'm looking forward to participating in more environmental initiatives and making a positive difference in our local environment and make connections with people of different backgrounds. #EnvironmentalConservation #VolunteerWork #InvasiveSpecies #CommunityEngagement #SustainableCities #YouthInEnvironment
