We are Canada's national voice for animal welfare and the federation of humane societies and SPCAs

About us

Our name reflects our vision − a Humane Canada − and that vision is shared by Canadians from coast- to-coast-to coast. Humane Canada believes that all animals possess intrinsic value, remarkable complexity and inherent dignity, and as such are deserving of respect and moral concern. On behalf of members, we advocate for the humane treatment, care and protection of all animals. We promote the concept that all animals used by humans be provided with high levels of care to ensure their health and comfort and that their behavioural needs are met. We also advocate for habitat protection and enhancement for the well-being of animals in the wild. Founded in 1957, since then we’ve earned our solid reputation and enviable credibility as the ‘go-to’ national voice on animal welfare issues for industry, media, government, non-governmental organizations and the public. We work collaboratively and cooperatively with key stakeholders based on the premise that we can have a greater impact creating positive change by being a part of the process instead of being apart from it. We drive positive, progressive change nationally to elevate animal welfare, end animal cruelty and improve animal protection through the enactment of effective legislation. We provide leadership on animal welfare issues and ensure these crucial messages are heard and understood across Canada. Humane Canada is accredited by Imagine Canada, representing the highest level of excellence in non-profit accountability, transparency and governance. Learn more about us at www.humanecanada.ca. Have you added your name yet? 📝 Lack of pet-inclusive housing is a leading cause of animals being surrendered to shelters across the country. Pet-inclusive housing reduces stress and loneliness for tenants, lowers turnover rates for landlords, and enhances social connections in communities. Happy National Black Cat Day! 🖤🐈🖤 Black cats deserve some extra love due to their unfair and unearned reputation of being “unlucky” or “a bad omen”. This is completely untrue and as a reminder, black cats are just as sweet and lovable as our other feline friends. Today is the perfect opportunity to show our love to this iconic animal. If you have a black cat, be sure to share their name or picture in the comments to spread some joy!

Happy Sunday! We’re here to brighten your morning with this past week’s best animal welfare news ☕ A Yukon woman’s beloved dog, Midnight, was reunited with her after an astonishing 10-day journey spanning 10,000 kilometers all the way to the Arizona desert and back. Midnight’s adventure took an unexpected turn when she found herself in the care of a stranger who took her along on his trip home. Thanks to her microchip, when the stranger brought Midnight to a vet, her identity was revealed, leading to a joyous reunion with her guardian! This incredible story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of microchipping your pets. A microchip can be a lifesaver, providing a reliable way to identify lost pets and ensuring they find their way back home. 🐾❤️

Millions of chickens and turkeys are waiting for you – use your voice! Deadline extended! The top-of-mind survey deadline has been extended; you have until November 8th to raise your concerns about the million of birds raised for meat in Canada each year. The review and update only happen about every 10 years, and the time has come to improve the lives of these birds across Canada. Submit your top three concerns about chickens and turkeys welfare - issues could include improving housing conditions such as access to natural light, lower ammonia levels, access to enrichment, eliminating physical alterations, and improved genetics that protect their health and welfare. Remember, the Code only covers on-farm issues; issues related to transport or other areas are not considered. Answers must be polite, short (about 14 words per concern), and written in your own words. Take the survey: https://lnkd.in/gEJy6BmA
