Developing affordable, low impact, emission free #longduration energy storage using compressed air, gravity, and water
About us
Hydrostor is a leading developer and operator of long-duration energy storage systems. Hydrostor leverages a proven technology solution for delivering long-duration energy storage (eight hours or more) to power grids around the world. Hydrostor’s technology uses compressed air and water to store energy. This patented technology allows grid operators to draw on clean energy, even when there is no sun to fuel solar panels and no wind to generate energy from turbines. Hydrostor has a successful utility scale facility commercially contracted to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) located in Goderich, Ontario, and two advanced projects under development in Kern County, California and New South Wales, Australia. Hydrostor has an extensive early-stage pipeline of projects in North America, Australia and Europe. Founded in 2010 and with headquarters in Toronto, Canada and offices in Melbourne, Australia and Sacramento, USA, Hydrostor is backed by Goldman Sachs Asset Management, the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and other forward-thinking institutional investors, providing financial security to commit to top-tier energy projects.

#VERGE24 was filled with impactful conversations and innovative ideas! Our sessions delved into the pivotal role of #LDES for a reliable and resilient power grid and explored how #LDES supports data center growth, transportation electrification, and industrial decarbonization. The collaborative spirit during the last two days at the conference reinforced Hydrostor’s mission to drive sustainable energy solutions forward. #DataCenter #GridFlexibility #DigitalEconomy
Finishing up a great two days at #VERGE and Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA) in San Jose. We’ve met with leaders in the clean energy industry who are pioneering new frameworks and structures, talked with developers and IPP’s, and participated in collaborative panels discussing the deployment of LDES. It’s been a great week and an exciting time to build upon Hydrostor’s success across the globe in advancing the deployment of LDES technologies! Hydrostor's debut appearance at Enlit Europe 2024 was an awesome success. We welcomed hundreds of attendees from across Europe to our booth, sharing our company story, the benefits of long duration energy storage #LDES, and our portfolio of projects being developed around the world. Our very own Sarah Griffiths Savolaine and Oonagh O Grady both participated in lively panel discussions on the critical need to deploy long duration energy storage and financing priorities for future energy grids. Thank you to everyone who connected with us on the ground, the City of Milan, and the entire Enlit Team for hosting such a great event! Tomorrow is the International Day of Climate Action, a day that reminds us of the urgency to tackle climate change head-on. The negative effects of climate change are clear: 🔸 Global temperatures have already risen by 1.2°C since the late 19th century, with the last decade being the warmest on record. 🔸 2024 is on track to become the warmest year ever recorded, with August 2024 marked as the hottest August in over 175 years According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), over 40% of global CO2 emissions can be mitigated with energy storage and flexible grid solutions. Now, more than ever, the role of sustainable solutions like renewable energy and long duration energy storage (LDES) is critical. 💡 It’s time to double down on innovation, policy changes, and global cooperation to make a real impact. #ClimateActionNow #SustainableFuture #LDES #NetZero

Last week, we hosted a reception with the NSW Government where we engaged on critical discussions with Energy Minister Penny Sharpe, MPs, key advisors, government agencies and our industry peers. Minister Sharpe made a major announcement that NSW will set a target to develop an additional 12 GW hours of long duration storage between 2030 and 2034, and confirmed that NSW will retain the critical 8+ hour legislated definition that has provided the certainty required to progress long duration storage projects. We look forward to continue working with stakeholders and deploying Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) globally! #NSW #longduration #energystorage #leadership

Our Co-founder & CEO, Curtis VanWalleghem, was in the big apple 🍎 last week as part of #unreasonablegroup and #barclaysmakeadifference movement to discuss the importance of scaling innovative solutions like Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES). 💡 From our vault, checkout this keynote #throwback when Curt spoke at Barclays Unreasonable Impact World Forum: "Powering the Grid by Storing Renewable Energy Underground" Watch video: https://lnkd.in/g9hfbaAM
During my recent visit to the New York office, I spent an afternoon volunteering as part of #BarclaysMakeaDifference movement, working with growth-stage companies taking part in our #UnreasonableImpact programme – an initiative dedicated to supporting founders who are scaling innovative solutions to society’s largest problems. It was rewarding to be able to lend my expertise to mission-based companies like Hydrostor and help Co-Founder and CEO Curtis VanWalleghem navigate some of the challenges that come with doing groundbreaking work in the #cleanenergy space. Volunteering in this way is deeply inspirational since it allows me to work closely alongside growth-stage leaders who are trying to redefine industries, while making a positive societal and environmental impact. Unreasonable Impact is such a unique programme within our industry, as its about leveraging the financial skills we have at Barclays and applying them to support the next wave of innovators and ultimately to the communities that these founders are supporting. I highly recommend you check out Unreasonable Impact and the brilliant work we’re doing together: https://lnkd.in/ezUyAFMK
