Today at PC Financial & Services, we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with good cheer, great music, and most importantly, wonderful company! Canada’s story is deeply intertwined with the contributions of Irish immigrants, who have helped shape our country with their resilience, innovation, and cultural richness. It is with immense pride that we announce very own President & CEO, Barry K. Columb, has been named Canada’s Irish Person of the Year for 2025! Established in 1991, this prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the betterment of the Irish community. Barry’s commitment truly embodies that spirit, making him only the third Canadian-born individual to receive this honour. Raised with strong Irish values instilled by his immigrant parents, Barry’s recognition is a powerful testament to his deep-rooted support and unwavering dedication to the Irish community. His commitment, however, extends far beyond his heritage. For several years, he has been heavily involved in the Community Outreach Program with the Sunshine Volunteers, providing support to new Irish immigrants as well as seniors, ensuring that no one felt forgotten. Barry also served on the board of the Ireland Fund of Canada, demonstrating his commitment to fostering stronger ties between Canada and Ireland. To honour Barry’s remarkable achievement, the Irish Person of the Year Committee held an award ceremony bringing together Ambassador of Ireland to Canada - John Concannon, MP - James Maloney, Minister - Anita Indira Anand, and Consulate General - Janice McGann, who paid tribute to his accomplishments. We are proud to have Barry as our leader, and this recognition is a testament to his exceptional character and unwavering commitment. Congratulations, Barry, on this well-deserved award! Wishing everyone a joyful St. Patrick’s Day!🍀

The tariff situation is complex and evolving fast so we have created a new tariff symbol (T) to help customers make informed choices at the shelf. Because of the tariffs imposed from the U.S., the Canadian government has been forced to put a range of retaliatory tariffs in place, on roughly $30B worth of goods… things like poultry, dairy items, fruits and vegetables, and more. This will unfortunately have consequences. We know affordability has been a challenge for so many Canadians, including the cost of groceries. We’ll continue to work with our suppliers to reduce the impact of these tariffs, but the unfortunate reality is that Canadians should be prepared to pay more for goods originating from the U.S. in the weeks ahead. However, there are non-U.S. options not affected by tariffs for many products and we are working hard every day to expand those options further. Canadians should not expect to see prices in our stores increase right away as a result of tariffs. As you would expect, we have inventory of U.S. products in our distribution centres, which we purchased before the tariffs went into effect. That means the pricing of many products will not be impacted until we sell what we already have on hand. But tariffs will eventually impact prices for certain products we sell – and that could come within a week or two for some items, such as fresh produce. When that happens, we’ll be adding signage with a distinctive “T” symbol to help customers understand that the price of the product has increased because it was sourced from the U.S. This will allow consumers to identify products sourced directly from the U.S., and also help them make informed choices and even look for alternatives. We will test this across our entire store network and gather feedback from customers. We’ll be looking to see if it helps them avoid the impact of tariffs and find suitable alternatives. With their input we will adjust accordingly. It's simple: when customers see a “T” on the price tag they know it has been directly sourced from the U. S. and impacted by tariffs. And as previously shared, we’re also marking products with a distinctive Canadian maple leaf to help our customers who want to support products produced in Canada. We are pro-Canada and not anti-USA. We have many trusted U.S. vendors, but we will be responsive to our customers needs. Customers can be assured that when tariffs come off, any tariff pricing changes will be entirely removed. We will share more specifics as they are available. https://lnkd.in/gXbuA7Pq

It’s hard to believe we’ve reached this point but today marks the beginning of a trade war between Canada and the United States. Misguided threats of sweeping tariffs from American leadership have resulted in necessary counter-tariffs here at home. Understandably, people in Canada are worried… about the impact this will have on inflation and the cost of living, on their livelihoods, and on the price of groceries. We’re trying hard to support consumers. Our actions to date include: 1. Buying Canadian: We are already one of the largest purchasers of Canadian products, and we’re doubling down. We’re looking for new ways to secure as much food as possible that is grown or made/prepared in Canada. In fact, we’ve onboarded about 30 new Canadian suppliers this year alone. 2. Alternative sourcing options: Where we historically purchase directly from the U.S. – because product is not grown or made in Canada – we’re working to source options from within Canada and around the world. Our goal is comparable quality and price. 3. Highlighting Canadian: Our customers want us to highlight Canadian companies, brands and products in-store and online. So we are. Customers can look for symbols in-store for products prepared in Canada, and soon, for products affected by tariffs. We are featuring Canadian items in our promotions and flyers, offering points for Canadian products and enabling customers to ‘swap’ their chosen product for a Canadian alternative through PC Optimum. 4. Advocating for Canadians: We will continue to advocate for Canadian consumers. For example, we’re talking to Government and many participants in our supply chain to decode the many potential consequences of this situation. This includes asking the Canadian government to exempt the most essential U.S. products from possible counter-tariffs, especially where customers have limited alternatives. Canadians are highly resilient, and the country has a history of tackling big issues and opportunities. We know that will be the case with tariffs as well. And while there will undoubtedly be challenging times ahead while these trade measures are in place, we will do our part to be transparent about the impacts, fair in how they are applied, and work hard to mitigate the consequences. We will keep you updated – which includes sharing the latest at Loblaw.ca.
