  • 🔩 Dissimilar Metal Corrosion in Mass Timber Hardware - Here’s what you can do about it 🌳 💡 What exactly is dissimilar metal corrosion? It is a type of corrosion that occurs when two electrochemically dissimilar metals come into contact in the presence of a conductive solution – AKA water 💡 Do both metals corrode? Nope! ➖ The anode (more negative standard potential in the pair) corrodes first. Zinc, commonly used in coatings for mass timber hardware, is highly anodic—meaning it will likely degrade first. ➕ The cathode (more positive standard potential in the pair) is protected. 💡What does this mean for mass timber hardware? We mostly deal with three metals/alloys: • Carbon steel (typically zinc-coated via electroplating or HDG) • Stainless steel • Aluminum Their combos carry varying levels of corrosion risk in wet service environments, which are: 🔴 Zinc-coated carbon steel + stainless steel 🟡 Zinc-coated carbon steel + aluminum 🟡 Stainless steel + aluminum 🟢 Same-metal pairs 💡How can you minimize dissimilar metal corrosion risk? ✅ Keep hardware dry during both fabrication and service applications. ✅ Use electrochemically similar metals if moisture exposure is unavoidable, e.g., in wet service environments. ✅ In such cases, make sure the anodic material in the pairing has a larger surface area than the cathodic material Dissimilar metal corrosion is a key factor that designers must consider to ensure durable mass timber construction. • 🚨 Bending ≠ Hydrogen Embrittlement Testing! 🚨 The construction industry deserves better than myths and misinformation. We've seen bending tests being misused as a way to evaluate Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) in fasteners. ❌ The Problem: A rapid bend test does NOT replicate real-world stress conditions that activate hydrogen embrittlement. Yet, some still rely on it. ✅ The Reality: Proper HE testing requires sustained stress over extended periods, as outlined in ISO and ASTM standards. Without these conditions, results are misleading—potentially putting structures at risk. At MTC Solutions, we don’t guess—we test the right way. Our continuous research ensures fasteners perform safely and reliably in mass timber applications. 📍 Let’s set the record straight. Meet us at Booth #708 at the International Mass Timber Conference! 💡 Want to learn more? We’ve broken it all down in our recent blog post—so you can understand the solutions for Hydrogen Embrittlement in mass timber construction. https://bit.ly/4iBycOt #HydrogenEmbrittlement #MassTimber #ConstructionSafety #EngineeringMatters #structuralengineering #building

Another milestone achieved! MTC Solutions Beam Hanger Design Guide US just got a major upgrade_ not to say a complete overhaul_ and it's packed with exciting updates! 🎉 I don’t usually brag, but this time, I will, because I truly believe this sets a new benchmark for design literature in the industry, and I’m also incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past few months! Our goal was to create a resource that improves communication across teams, whether you're a mass timber engineer, manufacturer, or installer_ while simplifying solutions integration into your projects with clear, intuitive, and user-centric design. We've focused on making the guide logically structured, easy to navigate, and designed for quick use. Big thanks to the amazing team, and a special shout-out to Jocelyn Dickie and Anthony Yang for sticking with me through the long haul! 💪🙌 I highly recommend downloading it, trust me, the changes are huge! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g6WUteYm Here are a few key highlights if you’re in a hurry: ✅Code-compliant & test-based capacities: • ICC-certified design load capacities for RICON S VS • Axial loading resistance (ASCE 7-22) • Seismic drift performance exceeding the 4% ratio! 📖 More design flexibility: • Tabulated beam sections with up to 2-hour FRR are finally back! • A new appendix section that includes fire protection, uplift design, and reinforcement. 📏Routing dimensions, installation gap sizes, and tolerances for a variety of setups (Single/double configurations, multi-hanger columns, fire-rated structures, and more!) 🛠 Step-by-step installation guidelines with easy-to-read artwork, procedure, tips, and tools recommendations. This is all about streamlining workflows and driving mass timber forward. I hope you find the new guide useful - let me know what you think! 🏗️🌲

🛠️ Corrosion vs. Hydrogen Embrittlement: Not the Same Thing! 🔬 Let’s clear up a common misconception—corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) are two separate issues in mass timber screws. ✅ Corrosion is an electrochemical process that causes material loss over time, impacting structural integrity. ✅ HE is a permanent loss of ductility due to hydrogen in a susceptible material under sustained tension, risking brittle failure. While corrosion can produce hydrogen (one factor causing HE), HE won’t occur without the other two factors. On the other hand, HE is not considered a source of corrosion. 💡 The takeaway? Preventing corrosion doesn’t mean your screws are protected from HE—and vice versa. Design accordingly! Coming to the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland? 🗣️ Learn all about corrosion and durability at the Talk our engineers have at the show. 💬 Don't miss our booth #708 where we'll show specimens from our recent corrosion and HE testing. #masstimber #engineering #structuralengineering #corrosion #hydrogenembrittlement
