About us

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection offers its visitors a unique and truly Canadian experience. From the art on its walls to the surrounding landscape, the McMichael is the perfect gallery for an introduction to Canada’s art, its peoples, their cultures and their history, and it offers visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy Canadian landscape paintings in the woodland setting that inspired them. Renowned for its devotion to collecting only Canadian art, the McMichael permanent collection consists of over 6,000 artworks by Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, their contemporaries, and Aboriginal and contemporary artists who have made a contribution to Canada’s artistic heritage. Built of fieldstone and hand-hewn logs, the McMichael houses thirteen exhibition galleries and is situated amid 100 acres of serene conservation land. Floor-to-ceiling windows enable visitors to enjoy marvellous views of the densely wooded Humber River Valley. Through a network of outdoor paths and hiking trails, visitors can discover outdoor sculptures and wander the McMichael Cemetery where six Group of Seven members and gallery co-founders Robert and Signe McMichael have been laid to rest. The gallery welcomes on average 100,000 visitors annually who enjoy year-round special exhibitions, programs, tours, and much more. Start your trip at mcmichael.com.

  • In celebration of #WorldPhotographyDay, we’re highlighting a series of captivating portraits by John Macfie featuring Philip “Swampy” Mathew. Mathew was a trapper, hunter, and guide who became a travelling companion of Macfie's and a frequent subject of his photographs. Macfie recounted how Mathew had once walked the Hudson Bay shoreline on foot, all the way from Fort Severn to York Factory, to play his fiddle at the Treaty Time dances. Up there, wood was scarce and was often floated for kilometres up the Severn River. The wind-driven currents of the bay also provided rare resources; boats that had been beached or wrecked sometimes washed ashore in pieces. With some hard work, the iron could be salvaged and used to make tools such as anvils or hammers. 📖 Excerpt from the catalogue for 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥: 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘧𝘪𝘦 🖼 Plan your visit to view these works in person → https://lnkd.in/gGNwxw6D 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥: 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘧𝘪𝘦 is presented by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in partnership with CONTACT Photography Festival. 1/ John Macfie, 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘱 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘸, 𝘏𝘶𝘥𝘴𝘰𝘯'𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘺 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘬, 1953, photograph, John Macfie fonds, C330-14-0-0-176, Archives of Ontario. 2/ John Macfie, "𝘚𝘸𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘺", 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘱 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘸, 1963, photograph, John Macfie fonds, C330-14-0-0-184, Archives of Ontario. 3/ John Macfie, 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘱 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘸 𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘬, Hudson Bay Coast, 1955, photograph, John Macfie fonds, C330-14-0-0-182, Archives of Ontario

A few months of preparation led to this meaningful day! 🎨 Super thrilled to be invited back to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, bringing back memories from my art instructor days. It was a joy to lead and design the 'Nature’s Gifts' Wendat workshop for Yawatsira’ Sunday, where we celebrated and taught about my Huron-Wendat heritage. Huge thanks to the assistants and volunteers who made the day such a success! ✨ https://lnkd.in/gztyEKMg
