Celebrating the Art of Canada*

About us

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection offers its visitors a unique and truly Canadian experience. From the art on its walls to the surrounding landscape, the McMichael is the perfect gallery for an introduction to Canada’s art, its peoples, their cultures and their history, and it offers visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy Canadian landscape paintings in the woodland setting that inspired them. Renowned for its devotion to collecting only Canadian art, the McMichael permanent collection consists of over 6,000 artworks by Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, their contemporaries, and Aboriginal and contemporary artists who have made a contribution to Canada’s artistic heritage. Built of fieldstone and hand-hewn logs, the McMichael houses thirteen exhibition galleries and is situated amid 100 acres of serene conservation land. Floor-to-ceiling windows enable visitors to enjoy marvellous views of the densely wooded Humber River Valley. Through a network of outdoor paths and hiking trails, visitors can discover outdoor sculptures and wander the McMichael Cemetery where six Group of Seven members and gallery co-founders Robert and Signe McMichael have been laid to rest. The gallery welcomes on average 100,000 visitors annually who enjoy year-round special exhibitions, programs, tours, and much more. Start your trip at mcmichael.com.

  • We are excited to share this new #HeritageMinute by Historica Canada commemorating the legacy of Mary Riter Hamilton. Hamilton courageously documented the haunting aftermath of WWI, capturing the scars of battlefields across Europe as a powerful reminder of war's toll.

Watch our new #HeritageMinute on Mary Riter Hamilton, who painted the battlefields after the First World War as a testament to its devastating cost. She would suffer mental and physical illnesses as a result of documenting the experiences of Canadian soldiers.    Born in 1867 in Teeswater, Ontario, Hamilton made her living as an artist after the death of her husband. When the First World War broke out, she tried in vain to join the men painting the battlefields. After the armistice was signed, the Amputation Club of British Columbia (now the War Amps), commissioned Hamilton to document the aftermath of the war. At the age of fifty-two, Hamilton set out for Europe. She would paint some 350 works in three years, the largest collection of First World War paintings by a single artist in Canada. She persevered for those who had fought, often painting in poor working conditions which caused her to suffer physically and mentally. She donated most of her works and died in 1954, in poverty and relative obscurity.    This Heritage Minute was made possible thanks to funding from Canadian Heritage, with in-kind support from Sunbelt Rentals Film & TV (formerly William F Whites).    A massive thank-you to producers Hayley Gray and Elad Tzadok (Scopitone Films Ltd.), Raynor Shimabukuro, as well as our script consultants and cast and crew!    Credits:  Mary Riter Hamilton: Megan Follows  End Narrator: Lyse Doucet  Director: Elad Tzadok and Hayley Gray  1st Assistant Director: Rachel Rose  Director of Photography: Naim Sutherland  Steadi Operator: Leo Harim  1st Assistant Camera: Christian Cummins  Editor: Elad Tzadok  Composer: Iman Habibi  Production designer: Louisa Birkin  Head of wardrobe: Nicole McCormick  Key makeup: LK Gifford  Key Hair: Emma Garland  Written by Elad Tzadok and Hayley Gray

  • "To understand where the Group came from, you have to understand Jackson's early career" says Douglas Hunter, author of 𝘑𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘰𝘯’𝘴 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴. Reflecting on his entry point into studying Jackson, Hunter shares, ‘Initially, I was interested in exploring Jackson's experiences as a soldier and war artist in the First World War, which was immediately before the Group of Seven came together...But I realized there was a much deeper story—about Jackson's foundational career as an artist and how the group began to form even before the war.’ Explore Jackson’s pivotal early works and their connection to the Group of Seven in 𝘑𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘰𝘯’𝘴 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴, now on view → https://lnkd.in/gNxUD2sW
