Strengthening the nonprofit sector, contributing to thriving communities
About us
The Ontario Nonprofit Network (ONN) is a vibrant network for the 58,000 nonprofits in Ontario. We engage, advocate, and lead with - and for - nonprofits working for the public benefit in Ontario. We work together to create a better public policy environment; one that strengthens nonprofits so we can do more to build thriving communities. At the ONN we activate nonprofits, convening and engaging organizations, leaders, and stakeholders to tackle cross-cutting issues at a sector-wide level. Our efforts are bringing the voices of the sector to policy- and decision-makers.

ONN’s policy report offers hopeful, creative solutions to ensure the sector’s sustainability. From advocating for a dedicated home in government for nonprofits, to pushing for fair funding and wage standards, there are many actionable ways forward. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gcWNjtdZ
“We’re in a position where we are going to have to be making decisions of: Do we give out less food?” - Heather Kirby, executive director of Kawartha Lakes Food Source, said demand for the charity’s services is outpacing the organization’s revenue growth. If the charity is forced to do so, it won’t be alone, according to a new report from the Ontario Nonprofit Network. In 2024, 56% of non-profits reported scaling back programs or services—a 17% increase from the year prior. In addition to reducing program capacity, 33% of non-profits said they increased program or service waiting lists over the past year, and 12% reported discontinuing programs or services. What's causing the strain? 📢 Results from our fifth annual state of the sector survey are now available: https://lnkd.in/gQ7yMbmh. Over 1,000 nonprofits, charities and grassroots organizations across Ontario responded, and the data is disheartening as policymakers continue to ignore our sector’s alarm bells. Not all hope is lost. The realities and trajectory of our sector can be changed if governments, nonprofits, and the public take some action. How? Our policy report includes data analysis, as well as recommendations on next steps. All survey resources including the technical report, and an amplification package, can be found on our survey page. Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey, Environics Research, and our partners for supporting this work. 💚

Over the past year we undertook a Labour Force Strategy project to build pathways that strengthen our sector’s ability to recruit and retain works. Two new reports are now available from this project: https://lnkd.in/duzF4nVk One report is focused on sustainable leadership, and has gathered insights from innovative sandboxes, and presents actionable recommendations for the future. The other report focused on identifying, and leveraging collaborative opportunities with post-secondary institutions, and workforce planning boards. A special thank you to Herleen Arora and Taashi Gupta for leading this research, and your invaluable contributions to these reports.
