To compete in a global market, Canada’s heavy industries – like steel, cement, and aluminum – need to keep reducing the emissions associated with the production of their products. This is not only because consumer demand for low-emissions products is going to keep growing, but because jurisdictions like the EU and the UK, two important future trading partners for Canada, are planning to impose import duties on products that come from countries without strong policies designed to reduce industrial emissions. If Canada’s federal industrial carbon pricing system is removed, our exports of steel, aluminum, cement and other commodities to the EU and the UK would shortly be subject to an import tax. Instead, if we keep collecting the industrial carbon tax here in Canada, we can keep reinvesting that revenue into research and development of emissions reduction technologies and projects, rather than simply giving it to foreign governments. Next week, the Pembina Institute will be in Whitehorse, Yukon, to convene the fourth Renewables in Remote Communities conference – a unique gathering focused on the community-led clean energy transition in remote communities across Canada. Ahead of the event, renewables in remote communities director Lynne Couves answers five questions about remote energy systems and what makes the transition to clean energy so unique in these areas. https://lnkd.in/g4RSVsM7

Good news for Canadian workers. $67 million across 10 projects will equip about 29,300 tradespeople with high-demand skills as we transition to low-carbon alternatives. “Just as entire sectors are changing, so too should our workforce” says Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Jobs and Families. This funding is powering the future of a net-zero economy. https://lnkd.in/g_MvEryB

The global #EV shift is accelerating, and Canada can keep pace by maintaining its momentum. Staying the course means lower transportation costs, energy security and economic growth. With the right policies, we can secure investment, create good jobs and strengthen our domestic EV supply chain. Our sr. analyst Hongyu Xiao breaks it down in The Hill Times 👇

Canadians should feel proud to have a strong and fair industrial carbon pricing system that limits the financial burden on everyday Canadians while securing Canada’s competitiveness in a global market. “Overwhelmingly, it is a system that large companies have welcomed – and that other governments around the world have envied,” says our executive director, Chris Severson-Baker. Right now, the biggest polluters are paying the lion’s share for tech innovation in reducing industrial emissions in Canada. Removing the industrial carbon pricing system and replacing it with expanded investment tax credits for clean technologies will shift the cost burden on to Canadian taxpayers. With forthcoming carbon-related import duties for certain products, it will also redirect funds currently collected in Canada to foreign governments, instead of funding our own emissions reduction technologies. Q: How to keep Canada’s economy healthy and resilient in the face of U.S. tariffs? A: A coordinated national policy of clean electrification. A nation-wide clean electricity grid and increased electrification of end uses would help address energy security and affordability, while delivering health and climate benefits. And with current U.S. trade dynamics, there’s new openness to interprovincial cooperation on clean power. “People are looking at this thing that was before seen as impossible,” says our executive director Chris Severson-Baker. “Now is the time.” 👇
